Civil Air Patrol Volunteers serving America’s communities, saving lives, and shaping futures. Established in 1941, Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the U.S.

Air Force and as such is a member of its Total Force. In its auxiliary role, CAP operates a fleet of 555 single-engine aircraft and 2,250 small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) and performs about 90% of all search and rescue operations within the contiguous United States as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Often using innovative cellphone forensics and radar analysis software, CAP was credited by the AFRCC with saving 108 lives last year. CAP’s 56,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. As a nonprofit organization, CAP plays a leading role in aerospace education using national academic standards-based STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education resources. Members also serve as mentors to over 23,000 young people participating in CAP’s Cadet Programs.

Civil Air Patrol's (CAP) Air Force Pararescue & Survival Orientation Course (PJOC) introduces select advanced cadets to the mission, standards, and mindset behind the United States Air Force Pararescue Guardian Angel mission.

When circumstances, terrain, distance, or danger stand in the way, Guardian Angels are trained to find a way through and bring people home.

PJOC is one of many National Cadet Special Activities available to cadets who commit themselves to growth, challenge, and service. For those willing to put in the work, it offers a rare glimpse into a profession built around a simple idea:

What does a uniform tell you?

Before someone ever introduces themselves, a uniform can say a lot. It can represent a profession, a responsibility, or a commitment to serving others.

For generations of Civil Air Patrol members, it has represented all three.

While CAP uniforms have changed over the past 85 years, the values behind them have not. They remain symbols of service, leadership, and dedication to something bigger than self.

From wartime service and post-war growth to today's cadets and volunteers, CAP uniforms have helped tell the story of the people who wore them and the missions they supported.

CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF

Before an aircraft leaves the runway, it receives a simple but powerful call:

Cleared for takeoff.

It means the preparation is complete. The conditions are right. What comes next is no longer a matter of possibility. It's time to advance the throttle.

Every day, Civil Air Patrol (CAP) cadets, like Cadet Capt. Makayla Abel, work toward moments that can shape the rest of their lives, from earning their wings and exploring aviation to building the leadership skills that prepare them for whatever lies ahead.

They put in the work. They complete the training. They prepare for what's next.

Sometimes every box has been checked except one: the resources to move forward.

Every generation inherits the responsibility to carry the mission forward.

The leaders who came before us faced challenges unique to their time. Their vision helped shape the future that today's Civil Air Patrol (CAP) members continue to build.

As Maj. Gen. Regena Aye said, "The congressional charter and Air Force Auxiliary designation were historic milestones, but they are only meaningful because of the people who brought those responsibilities to life."

That same spirit continues today. Nearly 85 years after its founding, CAP remains committed to adapting, serving, and preparing for whatever comes next.

Choosing a future path is hard.

Choosing one without enough information is even harder.

The Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training Familiarization Course (SUPTFC) gives Civil Air Patrol (CAP) cadets the opportunity to explore military aviation from the inside, gaining exposure to what a week in the life of a United States Air Force pilot may look like.

Experiences like this help cadets move beyond assumptions and learn directly from the people, environments, and responsibilities that shape the profession. Whether the experience confirms an existing goal or introduces a new possibility, the value remains the same: a clearer understanding of the options ahead.

One group of cadets recently had that opportunity at Laughlin Air Force Base.

🛫 Flying solo is a major milestone. Earning a Private Pilot Certificate demands even more.

The Civil Air Patrol's (CAP) Cadet Wings Program helps qualified cadets continue their flight training through a fully funded pathway to a Private Pilot Certificate.

🏆 Selection is competitive. Applicants must demonstrate advanced achievement in the cadet program, meet FAA training requirements, and secure a local mentor to support their training.

Samuel Ten represents what is possible when preparation meets opportunity. After earning his Private Pilot Certificate through Cadet Wings, Samuel returned as an instructor and has since helped two cadets earn their own wings.

Cadet Wings receives significant support from the James C. Ray Flight Training Scholarship and other valued partners, helping create opportunities for the next generation of aviators.

Civil engineering tends to attract a certain kind of person.

Builders. Tinkerers. Designers. Problem-solvers.
