Montgomery Improvement Association

Montgomery Improvement Association The Montgomery Improvement Association started as a citizens’ movement. The MIA catapulted the Montgomery Bus Boycott to the forefront for civil rights.

The MIA was organized by Montgomery, Alabama ministers and leaders on December 5, 1955 after the overwhelming success of a one-day boycott of black citizens who refused to ride the segregated city buses. The boycott was held in protest of the arrest of Rosa Parks for failing to surrender her seat to a white passenger four days earlier. The organization quickly elected 26-year-old Rev. Martin Luthe

r King, Jr. as its president and spokesman. What happened next would make history and forever change the face of race relations in America.
