Today, we honor those who gave their lives in service to this country and hold space for the families and communities carrying that loss.

Memorial Day also invites us to reflect on the ongoing work of democracy, freedom, and civic responsibility here at home. At a time when many communities across the country are still fighting to be fully seen, heard, represented, and protected, we recognize that the promise of democracy is something each generation is called to strengthen and defend.

On May 22, we are back in court for Allen v. Milligan as judges hear arguments over Alabama’s congressional map.

This case is about more than district lines. It is about whether Black communities in Alabama have a fair opportunity to elect candidates of their choice and whether our voices carry equal weight in our democracy.

After years of organizing and legal fights, community participation still matters. Courtrooms are public spaces, and showing up sends a message that people are paying attention.

Join us in Birmingham. Pack the courts. Be present. Bear witness and build community power.
📍 Hugo L. Black Federal Courthouse
🕣 Doors open at 8:30 a.m. (CST)

After the Supreme Court's recent Voting Rights Act decision, Southern states are redrawing their voting maps to dilute Black political power. Alabama's Anneshia Hardy said ‘our ancestors left us a blueprint' to guide the battle ahead.

This is bigger than partisan politics.

In this clip, Ashley Shelton and Anneshia Hardy break down why attacks on fair representation should concern everyone.

Because once racial inequity is reframed as “unconstitutional,” it opens the door to weakening protections far beyond voting rights.

Historically, when Black communities gained greater access to political participation, democracy expanded for everyone.

Memphis was not split by accident. Black political power was targeted.

In this clip, Brandon Jones of Civic Tennessee breaks down how Tennessee communities are being forced to organize under chaotic conditions after the dismantling of the state’s only majority-Black congressional district.

People deserve to know exactly what happened, who it harms, and what comes next.

Voting should never be delayed by technical issues. Today, several Birmingham precincts experienced voting machine problems, including machines that were not fully operational.

Election officials worked throughout the day to resolve the issues and extended voting hours at impacted polling locations to make sure every voter still had the opportunity to cast their ballot.

If your precinct is listed, you still have time to vote. Check the updated closing times and make your voice heard before the polls close. If you run into any issues, contact Election Protection at 866OURVOTE.

Modern voter suppression doesn’t always look like the 1960s.

Today, it moves through unfair maps, legal language, and systems designed to dilute our political power before people fully realize what’s being taken.

In this clip, Alabama Values Executive Director Anneshia Hardy breaks down what’s happening with redistricting, the Callais ruling, and Black political power across the South.
