Alabama Association of Volunteer Fire Departments There is nothing stronger than the heart of a Volunteer.

The Alabama Association of Volunteer Fire Departments (AAVFD) serves as the voice for Alabama's volunteer firefighters. Our office is centrally located in Montgomery, Alabama so that we can keep track of legislation that impacts your ability to field a safe and effective fire crew. We believe that by promoting training, information exchange, and mutual aid among our member departments, we not only

improve the safety of the firefighter, but the quality of protection provided to the communities we serve. Probably the best indicator of the effectiveness of the fire service in this state is the increasing number of lower Insurance Service Office (ISO) ratings found throughout the state.

Hear from our Fire Analyst Ethan Barrett on the current wildfire status in Alabama. We are continuing to urge evryone to avoid outdoor burning as drought conditions persist.

❌Under the Fire Alert, permits for outdoor burning on land greater than .25 acre are being restricted.
⛺️This does not regulate outdoor grilling or small campfires.
💦We recommend taking extra precautions if lighting any outdoor flame during drought conditions.

🌧While precipation of any amount will be beneficial, the forecasted rainfall amounts are not signficant enough to move the state out of drought conditions.
📈The AFC will continue to monitor the situation and is prepared to issue further restrictions, if necessary.

📢With worsening drought conditions across the state and low relative humidity, State Forester Rick Oates has issued a statewide Fire Alert effective immediately.
Over the past weekend, 50 wildfires burned more than 2,300 acres of forestland across the state. This includes a 500-acre wildfire in Mobile County, one for 412 acres in Coosa County, one for 382 acres in Choctaw County, one for 260 acres in Washington County, and another one for 105 acres in Escambia County.
In the last 30 days, 387 wildfires have burned approximately 15,850 acres of forestland across the state.
“With no measurable rain in sight, the continued extremely dry conditions create dangerous wildfire behavior,” said Oates. “These conditions create the potential for fires to escape easily and spread rapidly, taking longer and more of the agency’s firefighting resources to contain. Fast-moving wildfires not only destroy property and forests but also threaten the lives of citizens and endanger firefighters.”
This Fire Alert will remain in effect until rescinded by the State Forester, at least through Monday, April 20. Conditions will be reevaluated at that time. Permits for outdoor burning will be restricted only to Certified Prescribed Burn Managers. Anyone who burns a field, grassland, or woodland without a burn permit may be subject to prosecution for committing a Class B misdemeanor.
The Alabama Forestry Commission is the state agency committed to protecting Alabama’s invaluable forest assets and its citizens. To report a wildfire, call (800) 392-5679. For more information on the current wildfire situation in the state or any other forestry-related issues, contact your local AFC office or visit the agency website at www.forestry.alabama.gov

Happy Birthday Sparky

Help us wish Sparky the Fire Dog® a happy 75th birthday today!

For 75 years, Sparky has been helping kids and families learn how to stay fire safe at home and in their communities. Since 1951, he’s shared fire safety tips with generations of families, and he’s still wagging his tail and helping keep everyone safe today.

Want to do something simple for Sparky’s birthday? Test your smoke alarms and tell a friend to test theirs, too.

Are you an Exclusive Volunteer Fire Department?

We all want to think we are Exclusive but are we also Inclusive? We hear so often that I tried to join the local volunteer fire department around here but they don’t seem to want new folks. Understandably some people don’t fit in and we all know that. But just make sure you are putting out the Welcome Mat and trying to make sure everyone is welcome. It’s easy to get in a rut & not make others feel welcome. It’s easy to not want change to come to the department. But change is inevitable. And always remember this. With any organization no matter what kind it is “if you are not growing you are dying”. Sometimes we need to move over even to let the younger generation get started.
