At Old Cahawba there is a grave of an unknown Union soldier discovered in the 1980’s long after all other known graves had been transferred to Marietta National Cemetery. This location would have been just outside the walls of Castle Morgan, the cotton warehouse turned Union POW camp. Some believe there is a distinct possibility that this may be the final resting place of Major H.S. Hanchett, 16th Illinois Cavalry.

This stand of cedar trees have stood as sentinels over the unmarked graves of the Union soldiers believed to be buried in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery in Stanton, AL.

While the Quartermaster General was ordered to locate and move the war dead to national cemeteries, they would have had to dig up the cedar saplings planted at the head of each grave. At least eight of the trees survived or show evidence of having been there. The locals also believe that there are haves here, hence no one was buried in this location.

In 2019, the MG James H. Wilson Camp in partnership with the Col. Christopher C. Pegues Camp, SCV came together to honor the Union and Confederate dead from the Battle of Old Ebenezer Church.

Interestingly, the UDV placed a monument at this location in 1977 as a memorial Union dead from the Battle of Old Ebenezer Church.

156 years ago today - April 6, 1866 - the Grand Army of the Republic was founded as a fraternal organization of Union Civil War veterans. The organization promoted voting rights for all Union veterans (including African Americans) and declared the first national Memorial Day (then called Decoration Day) on May 30, 1868. The keynote speaker at the first national Memorial Day ceremony in Arlington National Cemetery? Union veteran/GAR member/Congressman/future President of the United States James A. Garfield.

The GAR was an important political and fraternal organization in the United States for nearly a century. It lasted until 1956, when the last known Union Civil War veteran, Albert Woolson of Minnesota, died at well over 100 years old. (He was most likely 106, though some sources have him listed at 109.)
