This Memorial Day, the Alabama Forestry Foundation honors and remembers the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

As we gather with family and friends, we pause beneath the shade of the trees to reflect on the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of those who gave their lives to protect our freedoms. Their legacy lives on in the communities, lands, and future they helped preserve.

Today, we remember. 🇺🇸🌲

Last week, the Alabama Forestry Foundation welcomed landowners to Camp Lee in Anniston for our Longleaf Landowner Workshop: Funding Longleaf for Wildlife.

Attendees heard from partners including Tall Timbers, The Nature Conservancy, NRCS, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Auburn Extension, Alabama Forestry Commission, and Quail Forever about how longleaf pine restoration supports wildlife habitat, improves forest health, and creates opportunities for private landowners. The day also included prescribed fire discussions, funding opportunities, and field tours showcasing longleaf management in action.

Thank you to all of our partners and supporters helping restore one of North America’s most biodiverse ecosystems.

Collaboration is at the heart of what we do at the Alabama Forestry Foundation! 🌲

Last week, our conservation and education teams teamed up at Southern Wonder Nature School as Brad Nail, AFF Conservation Forester, surveyed the property and developed a forest management recommendation plan. While Brad worked, students participated in Project Learning Tree activities and got hands-on learning experiences outdoors.

Brad also took time to teach the kids about tree age, forest mortality and even explored the creek to search for aquatic critters. According to the students, “Mr. Brad is the master finder of creek creatures!” 🦎💧

Whether you’re interested in managing longleaf pine, improving white oak habitat, protecting streams or enhancing your forestland, our team is here to help. Visit our website to learn more about our staff and conservation projects!

Recently, we partnered with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System Russell County Extension Office in Phenix City to host a Project Learning Tree workshop for local educators!

Teachers participated in hands-on, standards-aligned activities, planted trees, and heard from incredible guest speakers including Jennifer Davidson, Dr. Selina Bruckner, and Master Gardener Paula Brickner. In addition to PLT activities, educators explored the important roles bats and bees play as essential pollinators and contributors to healthy ecosystems. 🦇🐝🌳

With that, our PLT school-year workshops are officially wrapped up — but don’t worry, our biggest workshop of the year is coming this July! The Teachers Conservation Workshop is a three-day immersive experience focused on forestry and environmental education. Stay tuned for more details!

Last Saturday, we hosted our second 2026 facilitator training at Huntsville Botanical Garden! 🪴📖

Our facilitator trainings are designed for educators and natural resource professionals who are passionate about Project Learning Tree and ready to take the next step in their involvement.

Participants took a deep dive into Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative practices and standards, engaged in PLT activities, and stepped into the facilitator role themselves through breakout sessions. These sessions allowed participants to practice leading activities, share teaching strategies, and troubleshoot real-world challenges they may encounter when guiding a group.

We wrapped up the day by welcoming a new group of certified PLT Facilitators—continuing to grow our impact across Alabama!

If you’re interested in becoming a PLT Facilitator and are in South Alabama, we’ve got you covered! Join us November 5 at the Solon Dixon Forestry Education Center—more details coming soon.

Wallace Community College forestry students for two full days of real-world, career-focused experiences in the field! 🌲 On Monday, freshmen joined us to learn more about the Foundation, the forest industry, Best Management Practices (BMPs), Project Learning Tree, and more. On Tuesday, sophomore students took part in Tree Farm Inspector Training—an important step toward becoming certified inspectors upon completing the Lurleen B. Wallace Community College Forestry Program.

A big thank you to the Alabama Forestry Commission’s Ed Lewis and Auburn University College of Forestry, Wildlife and Environment’s Richard Cristan for sharing their expertise and helping prepare the next generation of forestry professionals!
