Rukundo International

Rukundo International Rukundo Preparatory School is our Flagship program. RI helps orphans, financially distressed families, and at-risk youth.

Founded in January 2014, Rukundo International (RI) is a NGO and 501(c)3 committed to sustainably transforming lives in Kabale, Uganda through education and empowerment. Rukundo International (RI) works as a partner and advocate for Kyanamira, a small rural community in the Kabale District of Southwest Uganda. We focus primarily on women and children to help ensure the community will have the nece

ssary resources to reach their full potential. Rukundo Preparatory School is our flagship program providing primary education for over 100 children and working as a home base for our community center. Words cannot express how thankful and humbled we are to have your support. Uganda has the highest school drop-out rate of all East Africa. Our goal is to help change those statistics. We are committed to sustainably transforming lives and improving the community of Kabale. The name of our foundation, Rukundo, means love in Rukiga, the dialect spoken in Kabale, Uganda. "In the end, it isn't about changing the world, but rather, how many worlds you have changed." (Unknown source) We look forward to partnering with you on this life changing journey and thank you for your support!

Everyone remembers their very first day of school. The clean notebook. The sharp pencil. The feeling that anything was possible. ✏️✨

For many children in rural Uganda, that feeling can be cut short—not by a lack of big dreams, but by a lack of basic resources.

At Rukundo Preparatory School, we believe that education isn't just about reading words on a page. It’s about building a foundation that lasts a lifetime.
When you invest in a student’s education in Kabale, here’s what you actually build:

📖 Dignity: Quality instruction and learning materials in a safe, nurturing environment.

🍲 Nourishment: Daily hot, nutritious meals so no child tries to learn on an empty stomach.

🚰 Health: Clean water access and sanitation facilities that keep kids healthy and in class.

We’re setting out to unlock human potential. And thanks to an incredible community of donors, that promise is being kept every single day.

Belief in a child’s future is the most powerful tool on Earth. Join us in shaping tomorrow. 💛

"There was a time when we thought it would not survive, but today we are filled with joy and hope for the future." — Garasi

When Garasi and his wife, Rosemary, noticed signs of PPR in their goat, the fear of losing it was heavy. In rural Uganda, a single livestock animal can be a lifeline for a household's income, nutrition, and long-term stability.

Our local veterinary officer was able to step in with timely treatment. Not only did the goat make a full recovery, but Garasi and Rosemary are now celebrating the birth of a healthy, bouncing kid! 🌱 🐐

Because of donors like you, families facing setbacks are met with immediate solutions. Goat rearing is transforming from a fragile venture into a sustainable path toward financial independence and household well-being.

💛 Thank you for turning worry into wonder for families like Garasi’s.

Give a kid a jump rope and a field, and you've got a whole classroom.

Our Sunday program runs on this idea. This month, 292 kids rotated through football, netball, skipping ropes, group games, and traditional dance, then sat down to crafts: jewelry making, knitting scarves, even hoe-handle making.

It looks like pure fun, and it is. But watch a jump-rope circle or a group trying to finish a scarf, and you'll spot the rest: teamwork, patience, fine motor skills, and the quiet pride of making something with your own hands.

The dance sessions do something extra. Drums, movement, and the passing down of culture to a new generation. 🇺🇬✨

That's what Sunday is for. Room to play, create, and grow, all at once. And judging by how fast they line up each week, the kids are fully on board.

Martha used to hang back.

At seven, she normally kept to herself during group activities, more comfortable on the edge of things than in the middle of them. Then she joined our Amaani G’abato program, and found Mellisa and Gracious.

The three of them, ages seven and nine, met through the program's choir, games, trips, and dance lessons. Now they sing together, play together, and look out for each other well beyond the sessions. What started as shared activities turned into a real friendship.

Martha's mom noticed the change first. "She used to keep to herself, but now she is confident, makes friends easily, and looks forward to every activity."

That's the quiet work of Amaani Gabato. Not just lessons, but the space to find your people and grow into yourself.
Happy Monday. ❤️

Did you know that Uganda's 2025 State of the Population Report called mental health a silent emergency? Reported cases rose 71% between 2021 and 2024. The report estimates 22.9% of children in Uganda live with a mental health condition. Fewer than one in ten people who need care actually
receive it.

That last number is the one we think about most.

Most people know our Girls Empowerment Program by the animals. A girl gets a pig or a goat, raises it, sells the offspring, and pays her own school fees. Promise did exactly that and reached Senior Four.
But a project only works if the girl running it is okay. That's what Safe Day is for.

On May 2, 140 GEP girls spent the day with two counselors and time set aside to say what's actually going on. School fees they don't know how to cover. Headaches and stomach pain nobody's asked about. Pressure they don't know how to name yet.

Fourteen asked for one-on-one sessions. Some were referred for further support.

Safe Day runs alongside the classes and coaching that make up GEP.
The girls who spoke up on May 2 are back in school this term. Support like Safe Day is part of why. ❤️

These kids are playing soccer in one of the highest towns in Uganda.

That's Kabale. Southwest Uganda, up in the Kigezi highlands, closer to the Rwandan border than to any city. Higher than Denver, cold enough for sweaters, hills terraced and farmed nearly to the top. Tourists call it the Switzerland of Africa. The 250,000 people who live here just call it home.

In Rukiga, "kabale" means small stone. We've been stacking them for years. A school, a cooperative, a scholarship program.

Some of the kids on this field will pass through all three.

That's where the work happens.

On May 21, thirty-one members of the Women’s Cooperative sat down for a two-part training: record-keeping and group dynamics.

Record-keeping sounds dry until you realize what it actually does. It tells you which goats are earning their keep, where the money went, and turns a guess into a decision.

The second half was about how a group works. Communication, leadership, who does what when someone's away. A cooperative only functions if the people in it trust each other's math.

The women left with new skills and a plan to use them. That's the part that lasts long after the training day ends.

Your lesson from Uganda: growth usually looks like paperwork before it looks like progress. Do the unglamorous thing this week. It compounds. ⭐️
