Undoubtedly, we strive to do our best with the resources available, with particular emphasis on Spay and Neuter services.
We recently received negative feedback from a veterinarian in Connecticut who adopted a cat from our rescue. While we respect that adopters are entitled to their opinions, we felt it was important to provide some context about the realities of rescue work and the policies we have always been transparent about.
Enfield Community Cat Project is an all-volunteer, all-donation-based nonprofit rescue. The cats and kittens that come through our program often originate from hoarding situations, abandonment cases, owner surrenders, stray populations, and other challenging circumstances. Unlike breeders, we rarely have complete medical histories and cannot guarantee the future health of any animal. This is clearly disclosed in our adoption contract.
The concerns raised involved a previously treated rodent ulcer and a positive f***l test performed after adoption. The catโs rodent ulcer had been treated while in our care and was documented in the veterinary records provided at adoption. Regarding parasites, our rescue policy has always been to evaluate and treat animals based on clinical signs and veterinary guidance. We do not routinely perform f***l testing on every cat and kitten that enters our rescue. The cost of doing so would significantly impact our ability to save animals, provide medical care, and continue serving our community.
Every rescue organization must balance ideal medical protocols with finite resources. If we performed every possible diagnostic test on every animal, we would help far fewer cats and kittens each year. Instead, we focus our resources on providing spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchipping, treatment for known illnesses, emergency medical care, and other essential services that allow us to save hundreds of cats annually.
We understand that not everyone will agree with our policies, and thatโs okay. Prospective adopters should choose a rescue, shelter, or breeder whose philosophy aligns with their expectations. We remain proud of the work our volunteers do every day and will continue our mission of helping cats and kittens in need while being transparent about our procedures, limitations, and commitment to responsible rescue practices. โค๏ธ๐พ
