Tonight we honored two HEROES!
Jarrod Miller was a 2001 Graduate from Montevideo. He served 12 years active in the Air Force and then 2 1/2 years in the Reserves. He was a Structural Craftsman in multiple Civil Engineer Squadrons where he built, maintained, and rebuilt (after attacks) military installations both home and deployed.
He was a Staff Sergeant when he separated from the military due to service connected disabilities that he incurred during deployments.
His assignments over the years had taken him to bases in California, to Korea, to Washington, D.C., to Guam, and to our Reserve Base in Minneapolis.
Jarrod did a support deployment to Bahrain in 02’-03’ and combat deployments to multiple locations in Iraq from 07’-08’ and again in 08’-09’, also 2 humanitarian support missions named Pacific Angel both to the Philippines in 2012 & 2013. Jarrod has received many awards and decorations from the Air Force, Marine Corps and Army over his years of service.
Jarrod is a Project Manager at J&D Construction. He is the proud father of Monte Freshman Janie Miller and 7th grader Jonnathan Miller. He is also the proud husband of our own Mrs. Jenn Miller in the High School. And last but not least he is the proud son of our very own Purple Heart Vietnam Veteran Bradley Laroy Gort who is in attendance tonight and is the reason Jarrod joined the military. Brad Gort please stand.
Brad is a decorated Vietnam War Veteran and a true American hero who served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1971. Sargeant E5, Brad Gort, assisted on a gun crew with B Battery, 3rd Battalion, 82nd Artillery in the highlands of Vietnam from March of 1969 to June of 1969.
On June 11, 1969, fighting intensified overnight on LZ East as the North Vietnamese Army started to overrun Gort’s unit. Gort and his comrades found themselves in a three-hour fight for their lives with direct hand-to-hand combat. As a result, Gort was severely wounded by three mortar rounds. At the conclusion of the battle, Brad was one of 11 soldiers still alive out of 40 men in his unit. All remaining members of his unit were wounded. Gort was flown from the battle in a med-evac helicopter and spent 5 ½ months in an Army hospital.
He was awarded a Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice. Brad is a survivor of that extremely bloody battle more than 54 years ago today.
