THE HISTORY OF COLOR
A Visual Lecture Inspired by Victoria Finlay’s Color: A Natural History of the Palette
June 3, 2026
Let’s savor Skittles (provided by Gentrain Society Vice President Becky Taylor) and learn about ART! This engaging 45-minute illustrated lecture explores the fascinating history of color through art, culture, trade, science, and storytelling. Inspired by Victoria Finlay’s celebrated book, the presentation traces the origins of pigments and dyes from ancient ochre cave paintings and Aboriginal color traditions to Renaissance ultramarine, royal purple, indigo trade routes, and modern synthetic pigments. Including some shocking secrets of historical pigment origins. Through compelling images and historical examples, audiences discover how color has shaped human civilization, artistic practice, identity, religion, economics, and global exchange. Join us on June 3rd to meet Melissa Shields Bispo, a Studio Arts MPC faculty member. She is a Monterey native and an
active member of the Monterey Peninsula Art Forum on Cannery Row. She studied art at the California College of Arts and Crafts
(B.F.A.) and earned her M.F.A at San Jose State.

Fog and Climate Change
Along the California coast, fog forms when warm, moist air from the ocean moves over the cold sea surface close to shore. Dr. Daniel M. Fernandez, CSUMB professor of applied environmental science, is one of the "Fog Five," as they call themselves, a group of interdisciplinary researchers who have been awarded a grant to establish the Pacific Coast Fog Research Project. They will study how fog patterns shape life along the Pacific coast and how those patterns are impacted by climate change. Their work will also help identify how we can best harness our beloved fog as a natural resource, as well as its importance to coastal ecosystems.

IMMIGRATION: LEGAL AND ILLEGAL
The controversies over both legal and illegal immigration over the last 10 years make it a ripe topic for discussion. In this talk, Dr. David Henderson will explore the various arguments for and against both kinds of immigration and will evaluate the effects of past immigration. He will also evaluate the main arguments against it and will consider "keyhole" solutions that address the potential problems while providing gains to both Americans and immigrants. David R. Henderson, Ph.D., is Professor of Economics Emeritus at the Naval Postgraduate School and a research fellow with the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He was previously a senior economist with President Reagan's Council of Economic Advisers.

THE PACKING OF THE TREASURES OF KING TUT
Tom Logan has been an integral part of the MPC Gentrain Program since 1991. In 1976 (50 years ago) he traveled from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to Cairo Egypt. At that time he was an Associate Curator at the Met assigned to oversee the packing of 55 priceless treasures from Tut's tomb. The purpose of the exhibition was to improve relations between Egypt and the U.S.A. But it was trying times in the Middle East. In addition to the unrest, a plane headed to Israel was hijacked to Entebbe in Uganda. This lecture will review some of the art objects and the adventures both chaotic and funny.

THE POET IN A DEMOCRACY: ROBINSON JEFFERS AND HIS RELEVANCE TODAY
Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts will explore the poetry and life of Robinson Jeffers, whose stark, powerful verse challenging the political and cultural norms of his time is even more relevant today. Known for his philosophy of "inhumanism" and his fierce critique of our country's engagement in World War II and human arrogance, Jeffers offered an uncompromising poetic voice during some of America's most turbulent decades. More importantly, his poetry resonates deeply in these unsettled and challenging times. Through commentary and selected readings, Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts will highlight how Jeffers' poetry provides guidelines for living in this time of ecological and political crisis.

Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts serves as president of the Robinson Jeffers Tor House Foundation, where he also coordinates the annual Prize for Poetry. A poet, translator, and Professor Emeritus at Monterey Peninsula College, he taught literature and humanities for over three decades.
