A stop at 868 Kearny Street takes you into the story of San Francisco’s Filipino manongs, the immigrant elders who helped make Manilatown a community.

The International Hotel Manilatown Center is a museum and gathering space where that history stays part of the neighborhood.

The old I-Hotel was home to Filipino and Chinese seniors. When they faced eviction, tenants and supporters spent years fighting to keep them housed.

But on August 4, 1977, the residents were forcibly evicted, and the original building was demolished in 1979.

The building there today is a replacement completed in 2005, with low-income senior housing above the center. The hotel name carries that history; this is a heritage stop, not a tourist hotel to book.

That’s what makes the visit worth considering alongside the usual San Francisco sights: you’re learning about people who found community here, and the struggle to keep a home in it.

The date behind California's Filipino American History Month goes back to a ship landing in 1587.

This year, California's Assembly and Senate recognized October 2026 through separate resolutions adopted on August 3.

But this isn't the first time California has honored the month. The state's recognition predates 2026, and Filipino American communities have celebrated it nationwide since 1992.

So why October? On October 18, 1587, Filipino sailors landed at what is now Morro Bay, California—the earliest documented Filipino presence in the continental United States.

The story kept growing after that landing, through generations of people who worked in California's fields, built ships, cared for patients, and made communities of their own.

I like that the month leaves room for those everyday lives, too. A family story about working in a cannery or becoming a nurse can belong in the same conversation as the dates in a history book.
