Monterey Bay Plein Air Painters Association

Monterey Bay Plein Air Painters Association We invite you to join us in celebrating the awe-inspiring beauty of our area. Our hope is to preserve and pass on that beauty into the future.

The Monterey Bay Plein Air Painters Association (MBPAPA) is a non profit organization, founded by landscape painters who live and work in the Monterey Bay area to foster the understanding and appreciation of plein air (outdoor) painting. We are dedicated plein air painters inspired by the sea and landscapes of the extended Monterey Bay area, from Half Moon Bay down to Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel

and along the Big Sur coastline, as well as the adjacent inland areas along our beautiful stretch of California coast. Founded in 2005 by some of the area’s leading plein air landscape painters, we have been active in all things plein air, assisting various conventions and competitions as well as hosting several of our own juried art exhibits every year. Become a part of the impressive history of plein air painters who have cherished our California coast by painting it and sharing it with others.

Here’s the scenes at today’s paint out at Carmel River State Beach. It’s constantly changing; quite a dynamic scenario with the lighting; shadows; overcast and wind. At some point; my palette blew off but luckily recovered quick. We artists were all spread out; some facing Point Lobos; some the river. Impossible to capture you all.. maybe next time. It was definitely sunny ☀️ and the river and its surroundings always inspires 🎨🫶.

Today’s plein air session was at one of our favorite spots - Mission Ranch; Carmel. Started a bit grey but ended up sunny and lovely. We had several creatives attending and I didn’t catch all of us in the photos but most of us 😊. We were as always; blessed with good company; our favorite subjects - the herd of sheep 🐑 🫶. Of course the backdrop of Carmel River; the hills and the cottages at the ranch was lovely as well. 🎨🫶
