Members of the Ice Age Trail Alliance's Marquette County Chapter
focus on:

supporting Ice Age Trail Alliance activities
maintaining the Ice Age Trail in Marquette County
advocating for the Ice Age Trail corridor planning process;
building outdoor family traditions by planning a variety o

f Trail-related events and
developing relationships with community organizations with interests in health, conservation and preservation. The Ice Age Trail segment that the Marquette County Chapter tends to is not only beautiful but also exceptionally rich in history. The John Muir Memorial Park Segment winds through the land of John Muir’s boyhood home. Muir was founder of the Sierra Club and is often called "The Father of Our National Parks".

We had a great group of volunteers out at the Karner Blue segment over the last 2 days, staining posts and painting blazes!
The chapter would like to give a big thank you to Teresa, Lynn and Mary who graciously (and with much patience) shared their knowledge of the best practices for this important task!

In the past week, Ice Age Trail volunteers led over 100 fourth graders and many chaperones on guided hikes on the Ice Age Trail at Muir County Park.

Students from St. John's School (Portage), Pardeeville Public Schools, and St. Mary's School (Portage) experienced the glacial features of the park while learning more about John Muir, the flora and fauna of the area, and about hiking.

These field trips are part of the IAT's Think Outside program which, through grants, provides prehike classroom sessions about the Ice Age Trail and Wisconsin geology and follow-up field trips to a nearby IAT segment where bussing and volunteers are provided.

Please encourage 4th grade teachers in schools in your area to fill out a simple application form to be part of next year's Think Outside program. Approximately 9,000 Wisconsin 4th graders participate each year!
