Friday, MTF Board President Paddy McMahon and Executive Director Ashlee Mayfield met with the U.S. Forest Service to advocate for the reopening of Old Romero Road.

This meeting happened because of you. The volume of emails sent by our community demonstrated real public demand — and it worked.

We came away with an important update: the Forest Service has determined that the trail restoration requires a higher level of review and has elevated the project to the Washington office. We are now in a 60-day window for a formal response.

🥾 Old Romero Road has been closed for three years. It doesn't have to stay that way. ***Click "See Details" below to link to our website and an easy way to send an email.

In the wake of the Thomas Fire, the Debris Flow, and Covid, our
community was reminded how vital access to our wild places truly is. The Forest Service recognized it then. That spirit of partnership has since been replaced by bureaucratic delay — and a stalemate that is affecting trails, fire roads, and community relationships across the Santa Barbara Ranger District.

The Montecito Trails Foundation has done the work. We have a fully funded restoration plan, ready to go this spring. The Forest Service is the sole obstacle.

Old Romero is one of eight trails currently closed on the Santa Barbara Ranger District. In every case — it is not funding, not volunteers, and not community will that is lacking. Non-profits, donors, and trail stewards are lined up and waiting.

We are grateful to First District Supervisor Roy Lee and Congressman Salud Carbajal, both of whom have met with MTF and actively worked to push the Forest Service toward action. Their advocacy means everything — and we are asking their offices to keep pushing.

The Forest Service needs to hear from you. It takes 60 seconds to send an email in support of the Old Romero Road restoration plan.

Every message counts. Thank you for standing up for our trails.

🌧️💧 TRAIL CONDITIONS UPDATE 💧🌧️

With record rainfall this week, our trails are showing off some spectacular waterfalls and flowing creeks! But before you hit the trails this weekend, let’s talk water crossings and safety.

Safe Creek Crossing Tips:

Use trekking poles for stability and to test depth before crossing

Sometimes the best strategy is embracing wet feet—if the water is slow-moving, commit to wading across in your boots 🥾

When in doubt, turn around! If a creek looks too high or fast, it’s always okay to choose safety over summits ⛰️

Want to keep your feet dry? Try these trails with NO creek crossings: ✨ Cold Spring Ridge Trail ✨ Franklin Trail
✨ Mission Falls from Tunnel Trailhead—stunning waterfall views without the crossings!

⚠️ Important: Many trails are still very wet and saturated. Now is NOT the time for bikes or equestrians—let’s protect our trails while they’re vulnerable and avoid creating ruts and erosion.

The trails are beautiful right now, but conditions change quickly after storms. Always assess each crossing individually, and remember: the trails will be here tomorrow. Your safety comes first. 🥾

✨Thank you for a remarkable 2025. We are so lucky to have such amazing community support! ✨
The reopening of San Ysidro topped the list, but so much ongoing maintenance and support all year round! The story of 2025 balanced restoration with a lot of Spring brushing ~ keeping those trails open and sight lines clear!

Have a cozy New Year’s Eve and we look forward to seeing you when the trails dry out! 🤍🤎⛰️🤎🤍

Happy Holidays from the Montecito Trails Foundation!

As we approach the holiday season, we hope you're finding time to enjoy our beautiful trails over the next few days before the rain returns. (Have you seen the forecast?!) After working hard to clear the trails following November's storms, we're looking forward to a cozy holiday season with just the "right" amount of rain! Fingers crossed.

Our trails are in great shape and ready for you to explore. And speaking of exploring, we'd love to see you at our Winter Solstice Hike on December 21st – check out the attached flyer for details! Pack a headlamp and maybe some Hot Chocolate for a change of pace.

As always, once the trails dry up after the holiday rains, we'll be ready to address any maintenance needs before kicking off the new year. Thank you for being part of our trail community, and here's to many more miles together in 2026!

Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday season,

Monday Motivation? How to hike newly restored access in Romero Canyon. In addition to the single track, the first 2 miles of the Old Romero Road/Jeepway are open.

⛰️ It is an out and back hike: 2mi up - 2mi down
⛰️ There is a closure barrier at mile 2 and beyond that barrier the trail is CLOSED
⛰️ Between miles 2 - 7 there are numerous slides and hazards.
⛰️Yes, we are working with the Los Padres National Forest to restore the rest of Romero in 2026 🌟

We hope you are as excited as we are about having a little slice of Romero back!
