April 19-25, 2026!

Libraries are more than books — they’re places where curiosity grows, creativity thrives, and community connects. Whether your joy is discovering a new novel, attending a program, exploring with your kids, or simply finding a quiet moment, there’s something here for everyone.

This National Library Week, we invite you to:
🌟 Find a story that inspires you

For April, we will be reading A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea by Melissa Fleming.

A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea by Melissa Fleming is the true story of Doaa Al Zamel, a Syrian teenager who flees war-torn Syria for Egypt, then risks everything on a dangerous boat journey to Europe. After traffickers wreck their boat, Doaa survives four days in the Mediterranean, saving a baby while fighting for her life.

Learn to Play Mah Jongg for Beginners in Four Easy Lessons

Looking for a welcoming, friendly space to learn Mah Jongg? The Friends of the Montecito Library invites you to a four-class series where experienced instructors Cynthia McClelland and Sandra Walther will guide you through the fundamentals of American-style Mah Jongg. Along the way, you’ll also explore the game’s rich history and learn the etiquette that makes playing both fun and rewarding.

Mah Jongg cards and sets provided.

Registration is required and is limited to 16 participants.
NOTE: Please register only if you can attend all four lessons. While most beginners learn the game relatively quickly, it typically takes several lessons to understand the somewhat complex rules.

For March, we will be reading On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong.

Flickering between wartime Vietnam and early thousands Hartford, On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous explores themes of race, nationality, gender, and the question of what constitutes a family. The story follows Little Dog, a poet in his early thirties with ambivalent feelings about his escape from his decaying New England town. In a novel-length letter addressed to his mother, Hong, Little Dog traces his own life story, which is inseparable from those of his mother and grandmother, Lan.

Copies are available for check out at our branches, along with digital editions on Libby and Palace Project. If you finish your copy quickly, please return it to me so someone else might get the chance to read.

For February, we will be reading The Maid by Nita Prose 📚

The Maid by Nita Prose is a cozy murder mystery featuring Molly Gray, a socially awkward, neurodivergent hotel maid who takes immense pride in cleaning. When she finds a wealthy guest dead in his bed, her unusual demeanor makes her the prime suspect, forcing her to rely on true friends to solve the murder.
