Today marks the start of Atlantic hurricane season.

When a storm hits, every hour matters. That’s why ShelterBox pre-positions emergency shelter and essential supplies in strategic locations around the world, helping us respond faster when families need support most.

This hurricane season, we are prepared to support more than 2,000 families with aid pre-positioned in Panama and Barbados, close to some of the areas most at risk.

Around the world, we also keep aid ready in Ghana, Kenya, the UAE, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Belgium.

Being prepared before disaster strikes helps us save time, reduce costs, and reach families faster when they need shelter most.

“Someone like me spends most of my time at home. Home is protection.”

This is Mr. Gebrehans. Now in his seventies and blind, he relies on his wife, Amet, and grandchild, Therik, for support. Before conflict reached Tigray, Ethiopia in 2021, the family lived peacefully as farmers. Everything changed when fighting arrived at their farm.

“We left our houses and went down to the river; we dug trenches and went inside them. Finally we were told, ‘Get out of the area! Get out of the town!’ So we left this town. And those who didn’t leave and who stayed here were killed.”

Forced to flee, the family spent years moving between rural areas, sleeping on the ground and avoiding towns.

“We were basically in the wilderness, moving from one wilderness to another. It was the worst time of my life.”

For Mr. Gebrehans, the constant displacement was especially difficult because he could not see where he was going and depended on his family to navigate unfamiliar places.

After returning home earlier this year, they found their house looted and destroyed.

Working with our partner PAD Ethiopia, ShelterBox provided shelter materials and cash assistance to help the family rebuild. Today, they have protection from the elements and something equally important: independence.

“It’s good. If no one is around, when I go out by myself, I go out and come back slowly, along the route I know.”

Hurricane season is almost here. The time of year when powerful storms can impact communities across the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf Coast.

As climate change fuels stronger, more destructive storms, more families are at risk of losing their homes. In the next 20 years, extreme storms could displace more than 200 million people worldwide.

ShelterBox has responded to more than 100 tropical storms, helping families recover with emergency shelter and essential supplies when disaster strikes.

The next major storm could happen at any moment. Together, we can help make sure families have a safe place to shelter.

We’re proud to partner with Jordana Brewster to help raise awareness of what families need most after disaster: shelter.

When homes are lost, families lose more than a place to sleep. Shelter provides safety, stability, and the foundation to begin again. Because after disaster, shelter comes first.

Watch and share.

📍 Lebanon Project Update

We’re currently supporting families in Lebanon who have been forced to flee their homes due to the ongoing conflict. Since March, more than 1 in 5 people in Lebanon (over 1 million people) have been forced to flee their homes.

Many people left quickly without their belongings and are now living wherever they can, including on the streets or in makeshift shelters.

With your support, we are working with local partners, .socialinnovationhub and , to provide basic items like bedding, kitchen sets, and hygiene kits. This helps families sleep, cook, and stay clean. We are also giving small cash payments so people can buy things they urgently need, like clothes, heating, or rent.

Thank you for making this possible. It means families can meet their basic needs after losing so much. 💚

For women and girls forced from their homes, shelter means more than protection from the elements. It means privacy, safety, and a place to care for their families, rest at night, and begin again.

Mona received that support after fleeing violence in Sudan and finding safety in Chad. But thousands of women like her are still waiting for that same protection. Your support can help provide emergency shelter and essential aid to families rebuilding after disaster.

Women and girls often face increased challenges and risks after disaster but when women are involved in response planning from the start, recovery is more effective, inclusive, and long-lasting.
