South Cumberland Community Fund cultivates leadership and resources to address pressing needs across Tennessee's South Cumberland Plateau.

South Cumberland Community Fund, established in January 2012 under the auspices of the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga, represents the first local philanthropic entity to serve the tri-county area of the South Cumberland Plateau in rural Tennessee. This isolated highland region lies roughly halfway between the metropolitan communities of Nashville and Chattanooga, but is virtually invisible to the institutional philanthropy in those cities. To raise the profile of this place and launch a self-help movement, the Fund’s leadership has endorsed the following Vision and Mission:

Vision Statement: The vision of South Cumberland Community Fund is that the Plateau be a place of hope and prosperity for all its residents and communities, inspired by the Fund’s philanthropic and regional leadership.

South Cumberland Community Fund, working with Tech Goes Home Tennessee, is offering free digital skills training on the Plateau. The program, consisting of 5 sessions, will be led by Katie Collier, Technical Clerk at Chattanooga State Community College in Kimball. Sign up here: https://forms.gle/rJHKtBibR368gdVx6.

This hands-on training will be tailored specifically to the everyday needs of people working and volunteering with nonprofits and community organizations. The entire program is free, and participants who complete all 15 hours of training will receive a new Chromebook, free of charge.

The training sessions will take place September 28 through October 2 from 5:00–8:00 p.m. each evening. Participants must commit to ALL 15 hours of training upon sign up.

Sessions will be held at Morton Memorial United Methodist Church (322 W Main St, Monteagle, TN 37356). Space is limited to 15 participants. Email us at [email protected] for more information.

First-year students at Sewanee are beginning their college experience with an early introduction to community service and the communities surrounding the University.

On Thursday evening, members of the Monteagle-Sewanee Rotary Club introduced a group of incoming students to Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit that builds and donates beds to area children in need. Rotary Secretary Martha Krenson, President Mary Beth Tate, and past president Michael Payne shared their experiences with the organization and the impact its work has on local children and families.

They were joined by SCCF Executive Director Paul McKee, Board Chair Eddie Krenson, Grants Committee Chair Betty Carpenter, and board member Amy Patterson, who also serves as Director of Sewanee’s Office of Civic Engagement.

This morning, the students spent time building beds at the Sleep in Heavenly Peace workshop in Monteagle as part of a first-year experience program organized with Sewanee’s Office of Civic Engagement.

McKee was struck by how quickly Sewanee connects its newest students with the surrounding community. “Many have just landed in Tennessee, some for the very first time, and they haven’t even had the chance to fully unpack their suitcases before jumping into a service project that benefits our community,” he said.

That spirit of service continues throughout the year. SCCF staff, board members, and volunteers regularly participate in Sewanee’s annual Martin Luther King Day of Service, when more than 400 students, staff, and community members come together to build beds and make blankets in support of Sleep in Heavenly Peace.

SCCF is proud to support Sleep in Heavenly Peace and grateful for its continuing partnership with the University of the South.
