IMPORTANT INFO CONCERNING OUR FOOD PANTRY:
Dear Friends and Guests of the Monte Vista Community Food Pantry,
On May 12, we had a person come into the pantry who was belligerent, did not have ID, did not know his address and had problems spelling his name. Our staff decided, even though he did not provide his personal information, he stated he was hungry, and we believe people need food.
As he was at our check-out station, he was offered to bag his groceries but refused the bags. Instead, he said he would just take the cart. The carts belong to the pantry, and we require the carts to be returned after the guests deliver their groceries to their vehicle. The staff told him the cart could not leave the pantry property. At this point, this individual took off running down the street with the cart. He was followed by our Pantry Manager who again told him the cart could not leave the property. His response was to yell and swear at her, and he threatened to assault her. Law Enforcement is aware of this incident.
One of our biggest concerns is the safety of our guests and volunteers. Behavior and actions like this will not be tolerated.
To keep our volunteers and guests safe, we outline further rules here:
1. Carts do not leave the property. (Our carts cost us $215.00 each. If one goes missing, the cost to replace it would be compared to purchasing 100 dozen eggs for our guests.)
2. Everyone must provide proof of address. We serve Rio Grande County residents only. If you do not have an ID card, please provide another proof of residence, i.e. electric bill, receipt of rent, etc.
3. If a cart is removed from the property, the person removing will not be admitted to the Pantry for One year.
4. If a person chooses to threaten, harm or behave abusively to a volunteer or another guest, Law Enforcement will be called and that person will be forever banned from the Pantry.
Thank you all for understanding.
Signed,
Board of Directors, Monte Vista Community Food Pantry
