At Valley Veterans Recreation, we are beyond grateful for the incredible generosity of HPM Contracting out of Centennial, Colorado. Their donation of appliances will make a meaningful difference for the veterans we serve here in the San Luis Valley.

A special thank you to Tomas Sanchez for helping make this happen. We hope you all know the impact your kindness and generosity will have on so many lives. Support like this strengthens our mission and reminds our veterans that their community cares.

We look forward to sharing photos and updates so you can see firsthand the smiles and happiness you've helped create for veterans throughout the San Luis Valley.

From all of us at Valley Veterans Recreation—thank you, HPM Construction and Tomas Sanchez, for your support and commitment to our veterans!

The Veterans Service Day Project is almost here.

In partnership with the National Parks Conservation Association, veterans will come together for a day of stewardship, teamwork, and outdoor service connected to the Great Sand Dunes region.

This event reflects what Foxhole is all about:

People showing up.
Working together.
Building community through shared experience.

Volunteer space is limited, and we’re looking forward to spending the day alongside veterans who want to make a difference while connecting with others.

If you’ve been thinking about signing up, now is a great time.

Check out the link for details and registration.

Veterans may be eligible to file for VA disability compensation if they have a current medical condition that may be connected to their military service.

A disability claim can involve physical conditions, mental health conditions, injuries, illnesses, or conditions that became worse because of service. The VA reviews the evidence and makes the official decision.

The Alamosa County Veterans Service Office can help explain general claim options, assist with forms, discuss what evidence may be helpful, and help prepare a claim for submission.

We are not the VA and cannot guarantee an outcome, rating, payment, or timeline.

To schedule an appointment, visit calendly.com/vso-alamosacounty or call 719-589-1109.

Please do not post personal medical, military, financial, or claim information on Facebook.

The Alamosa County Veterans Service Office helps veterans, dependents, survivors, and caregivers understand and access benefits available through the VA, the State of Colorado, and other official programs.

Our office is not the VA. We are a county service office working through the Colorado Division of Veterans Affairs (CDVA) to connect individuals and families with benefits, claims assistance, and available resources.

Our Team:
Our office is staffed by Craig Rauwolf and A. “Kam” Kamrud, both U.S. Army Veterans, who are here to assist with benefit education, claims support, appointment guidance, and navigating official VA and state programs.

You do not have to deploy to have a service-connected disability.

Some veterans assume VA disability compensation only applies to injuries or illnesses from deployment or combat. That is not always true.

A condition may be considered for service connection if it began during qualifying military service, was caused by qualifying service, or was made worse by qualifying service.

This may include injuries, illnesses, training events, duty-related exposures, or other documented service-related circumstances.

The Alamosa County Veterans Service Office can help explain general claim options and what information may be useful.

The County VSO is not the VA and does not make claim decisions.

Please do not post personal, medical, military, financial, or claim information on Facebook.

VA health care is one of the benefit areas veterans often ask about. Eligibility may depend on service history, discharge status, income, disability rating, special service periods, or other factors.

The Alamosa County Veterans Service Office can help explain general VA health care enrollment information, discuss what documents may be helpful, and connect veterans with official VA resources.

The VSO is not the VA and does not make health care eligibility decisions, manage VA appointments, or provide medical advice.

If you are unsure where to start, contact the office directly.

Schedule an appointment at calendly.com/vso-alamosacounty or call 719-589-1109.

Please do not post medical, financial, military, or claim information on Facebook.

Military records can be important when applying for VA, state, or local veterans benefits.

A DD214 or other service record may help confirm dates of service, discharge character, military occupation, deployments, awards, or other service information. These records may be useful for claims, health care enrollment, burial benefits, license plates, state benefits, or other programs.

The Alamosa County Veterans Service Office can help explain what records may be useful and provide general guidance on how to request missing records.

If you have records available, bring copies to your appointment. Do not send them through Facebook.

Schedule an appointment at calendly.com/vso-alamosacounty or call 719-589-1109.

Please do not post personal military or claim information online.

Valley Veterans ReCreation would like to recognize Josephine Montoya. Thank you for your service to our Country and the South Conejos community.

Bio:

Josephine Montoya, current K-5 Principal and La Jara Colorado native, for the Guadalupe Elementary in South Conejos School District Prior to this role, I was the K-12 assistant principal and the first grade teacher. As a native of the San Luis Valley, my foundational values were rooted in community and citizenship. After serving 27 years as an Air Force Security Forces member for 13 years and subsequent federal service employee with the Office of the Secretary of Air Force in the Prntahon for 14 more years, I understand service, self-discipline, and dedication to a mission earning both a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Management and a Master’s In Business Administration along the way. In 2018 I retired from the Department of Defense to start my education journey as an elementary teacher in Colorado Springs then in 2022, finally had an opportunity to teach and become a leader for the Guadalupe Elementary and the Antonito Middle and High School. Serving this community is my way of paying it forward by shaping the lives of our students with academic knowledge, skills development, and character building as they prepare to start their incredible post secondary journey. My greatest hope as an educator and administrator is that my small town valley girl success story will influence and encourage the generations of students that follow to be courageous and prepared for great things when they graduate.
