COMMUNITY GARDEN SPOTLIGHT - CREEKSIDE PARK

Originally the site of the old Monte Rio School, Creekside Park features a community garden, picnic areas, a creekside trail, a skateboard park and the ever popular Lightwave Cafe. It’s a lively and welcoming place for both residents and visitors and Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park is within easy walking distance. On weekends in the summer there is a ‘start cart’ in front of the Cafe that features fruits, vegetables and flowers all straight from the garden. Selection varies weekly and all donations go directly back into supporting the gardens.

Looking for ways to cool down this summer? Check out the new addition to Monte Rio Redwoods Regional Park and Open Space Preserve🌲

Last year, we partnered with Save the Redwoods League, Sonoma County Ag + Open Space, and Sonoma County Regional Parks, to protect the 1,517-acre Monte Rio Redwoods Expansion, a parcel that was the largest remaining unprotected acreage of coast redwoods in Sonoma County south of the Russian River. Save the Redwoods League then conveyed the property to Sonoma County Regional Parks for long-term stewardship, and the park is now open to the public.

This acquisition did more than protect a beautiful forest. It linked a contiguous protected area of more than 22,000 acres of forest, wildlife corridors, watershed, and parkland from the Sonoma coast inland to the Bohemian Highway and north to Jenner Headlands. It safeguarded the headwaters of three key Russian River tributaries—Willow Creek, Dutch Bill Creek, and Freezeout Creek—creating crucial spawning grounds for coho salmon and steelhead trout. And, it preserved a redwood forest that stores vast amounts of carbon in its rot-resistant wood for centuries.

Let us know if you make it out there!
