Montclair Local is an independent local news organization founded in 2017 with the mission to “spark dialogue, objectively inform and build community in Montclair.”

Since 2021, the Local has been a non-profit organization, supported by the community. In the spring of 2023, the Local’s board of trustees announced it would merge with Baristanet, a digital news outlet covering the Montclair area si

nce 2004. Uniting two strong local organizations will offer readers a richer menu of stories and services. The combined organization will remain a nonprofit called Montclair Local. While the work of integrating the two organizations is under way, you’ll still find Montclair Local content at Montclairlocal.news and Baristanet coverage at Baristanet.com. We're building a spiffy new website expected to be ready in the summer of 2023.

A Montclair pastry chef is being held at a federal immigration detention facility after being detained Monday while on vacation near Niagara Falls, according to his family.

Leonardo Argoti, an Ecuadorian national and executive pastry chef at Faubourg NJ and Bijoux French Pastry in Montclair, was taken into custody in Buffalo, New York and is now being held in upstate New York, his family said.

He came to the United States in 2021, has a work permit and a pending asylum case, according to his family.

His detention has sparked an outpouring of support across Montclair, including a fundraising effort as his family works with an attorney on next steps.
