Students who are part of the Center for Social Justice (CSJ), a small learning community at Montclair High School, enjoyed a performance of "What The Constitution Means to Me," at Montclair's Vanguard Theater earlier this spring.

The trip was made possible by an MFEE grant awarded to CSJ teacher Sabrina Conti, and it was part of a deeper learning experience. Before and after the show, students engaged in discussion about who wrote the Constitution, who it protects, and how it is implemented in today’s society. "CSJ students were excited to apply what they learned from the play in their social justice classes," she said.

Melissa McHugh, a producing director at Vanguard, added: "The play invites audiences to wrestle with big questions about rights, history, and who is truly protected under the Constitution, and these students really rose to that invitation. Their reflections were thoughtful, curious, and at times deeply personal. It was exactly the kind of experience we hope for—one where young people feel empowered to think critically, ask questions, and see themselves as part of the ongoing conversation."

MFEE annually awards $60,000 in grants to educators across the Montclair Public Schools. It’s been funding teachers’ big ideas for 35 years, and the grant-making program continues to be a core part of the organization’s mission.

It was an epic night, Montclair! Thank you to our brave competitors and to every individual who helped make MFEE’s Minute to Win It a success. We are still buzzing from the generosity, joy, and community spirit that filled that enormous room! It may’ve been “recess” for adults, but it’s the 6,000 kids who attend the Montclair Public Schools who are the real winners.

There’s still time to give: https://givebutter.com/c/mfee-minute-to-win-it
