The International Opera Awards committee announced its finalists today, and TN made the list in a surprising category: “Best Festival.”

“Surprising,” because the other finalists are well beyond our dimensions in length, budget, history, or all three. But by now it’s no surprise that the importance of what we do is winning recognition worldwide. In this case the honor is for our celebration of opera’s 200 years in America, with Il Turco in Italia and what a leading Italian critic called “a Don Giovanni that has never seemed so alive.”

Big thanks to all who supported, attended, and performed in our 2026 Festival and here's to a thrilling 2027 and many more!

The sight-reading excerpts are on the stand, the pianist has iPad in hand, and our search for the artists of the 2027 Resident Artist Program is officially underway.

We’re listening for beautiful bel canto lines, sparkling coloratura, stylish cadenzas, expressive Italian—and, above all, singers with something compelling to say.

Deadline (“L’ora è fissata”):
Applications must be received by Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

Eligibilities (“Si può?”):
No age limit. All positions must be filled either by
U.S. citizens or permanent residents
Singers with OPT/CPT eligibility
Holders of O-1B/P-3/P-2 visas or other eligible U.S. work permit
Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are members in good standing of the Canadian Federation of Musicians

Materials Required (“Bravo! che bella voce! Io non sapea / che cantaste si bene”)
Two recent recordings (made within the last 24 months) and a current résumé must be included as part of the completed application form.
At least one of the recordings should be in video form. The selections may be in any genre (opera, song, or oratorio), any period, and any language, but please bear in mind that we specialize in 19th-century Italian opera.

Late applications (“Ah! tardai troppo”):
Anyone wishing to apply after the deadline should write to us at [email protected] to inquire about the possibility. We will evaluate these requests on a case-by-case basis.

Applications for Teatro Nuovo’s 2027 Resident Artist Program are due soon.

We’re looking for singers who want to go deep—not just into repertoire, but into the craft and history of Italian opera. Our Resident Artists are strong musicians, independent thinkers, technically ambitious, curious about Italian language and poetry, and open to rethinking what “tradition” means.

If you’re excited by historical performance practice, bel canto technique, ornamentation, language, style, and the chance to investigate the score with real depth and intensity, we want to hear from you.
