Concerned Citizens of Montauk

Concerned Citizens of Montauk CCOM preserves and protects Montauk's unique environment and ecology through education, advocacy and grassroots action.

In 1970, a small group of concerned citizens organized themselves in order to block plans by developers to build 1,400 houses near Big Reed Pond in Montauk. Their success lead to the creation of Theodore Roosevelt County Park. Since then, CCOM has grown to become one of the most effective nonprofit environmental groups in Eastern Long Island, playing a major role in preserving State, County and lo

cal parks such as Camp Hero, Shadmoor, Hither Woods, Culloden Point, The Sanctuary and Amsterdam Beach, and helping to successfully protect more than 70% of Montauk’s land. When Montauk’s environment is threatened, CCOM’s board, membership and professional staff work with their neighbors to build grassroots coalitions and educate elected officials about the true costs of failing to protect our natural resources. CCOM advocates for sustainable, appropriate growth that recognizes the critical link between our ecology and our economy. When necessary, CCOM engages its environmental legal team to force protection of Montauk’s unique natural resources. Today thousands of residents and tens of thousands of visitors enjoy the trails, beaches, scenic vistas, and unique rugged beauty of Montauk because of CCOM’s work. CCOM has also successfully:
•Protected Montauk from the threat of oil drilling off the Montauk coastline

•Stopped the dumping of toxic dredge spoils in LI Sound and the NY Bight

•Joined forces to create the Community Preservation Fund, a land bank funded through a 2% real estate transfer tax (first time home buyers are exempt)

•Worked for the inclusion of Peconic Bay into the National Estuary Program

•Opposed marina development which threatened water quality in Lake Montauk and Fort Pond Bay

•Lead the coalition to stop high speed ferries from docking in Montauk

Our last (but definitely not least) event of the weekend was our Annual Great Montauk Cleanup! 🌎🌍🌏 We had 40 dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers clean up litter around Montauk. 💪🏼 Thanks to them, approximately 30 bags of litter were removed from our streets and beaches. Thank you to the businesses who generously donated items for our raffle. 🎉
If you missed that cleanup, no fear! You can pick up trash wherever you are, and during this week only, you can send us a photo to receive a custom RelicxCCOM tote bag 😎 see our other post for more details

We had a packed weekend of events! 💪🏼 Starting off with our 💧Septic Upgrade Panel Event💧: We want to thank all of the attendees, panelists, and presenters who joined us at the Montauk Library to learn more about septic upgrades. It was wonderful to see such strong interest from our community, and we’re very eager to support homeowners in any way we can as you move forward.

A great deal of valuable information was shared during the forum. If you’d like to revisit it or share it with others, you can access the recorded event on our website under water quality. 🎥
