Montauk's groundwater and our community are at risk. A petition was started asking the town to stop this project until we get real answers—full environmental and traffic studies, honest disclosure of the owners, and a real plan for a venue claiming 450 people with only 12 parking spaces. This doesn't add up.

There are some concerns in the messaging regarding yesterday's CCOM email blast to its membership.

1. Almost all of the people who came to the hearing or called in were CCOM employees or board members, not regular community members.

2. Their change dot org petition numbers “in favor” cannot be verified as East Hampton property owners—anyone can sign a change dot org petition. And they only submitted names.

3. After reviewing the letters submitted to Town Hall all of their letters were copied and pasted from their website meaning no one wrote their own. And we would challenge anyone one of those people to understand the science of what could happen here if it moved forward.

4. The EAF was not completed properly or submitted to the Town Clerk and they were MANDATED to do a SEQRA review which it didn't. Therefore they cannot move forward.

5. A draft lawsuit Article 78 was submitted to the Town by Twomey Latham Shea who represents Jeanne Nielson. The passage of the project in its current form using goats will trigger the lawsuit.

6. Many, many environmentalists are against this project. And the ones they list as far as we can tell have not walked the reserve. Meaning they are reading a proposal out of context without knowing the property.

7. The amount of invasive plants that have been identified is questionable. And some are native.

8. Many speakers spoke about vistas and used words like “experiment” who were in favor.

9. In the end, as far as we can see, based on everything that has gone on, the project cannot be approved in its current state due to procedural missteps, legal ramifications, and the necessity of such an “invasive” project, no pun intended

10. I find it questionable that CCOM is asking for its members to support this proposal without the required and Mandated SEQRA and in addition to supporting a legal battle. What do you think? Enter in comments below or DM

Benson Bathing Reserve Community Survey. As of November 15, 2023.

59.4% : I am NOT in favor

14.3%: Just trim the growth its cheaper and less invasive.

13.5%: The Town should hire an independent consulting firm for a second opinion and one that specializes in dune restoration on the east coast before accepting this proposal.

6.0%: I am in Favor.

3.6%: I am undecided.

3.2%: Make it a referendum question on the ballot on Nov 7, it’s too important to be decided by a few people.

The Town Board Hearing on Thursday is keeping the record open for two weeks. Residents should continue to discuss and share their opinions on the survey.
