The TNR Project is a group of volunteers who support TNR (Trap/Neuter/Return) of all feral, stray, homeless, community & abandoned cats/kittens on our streets. We also participate in adoptions for the homeless kittens we rescue from the streets and socialize, which always requires effort on our volunteers' parts. Our ultimate goal is to inspire a neighborhood-based spay/neuter support model which,
if replicated across LA, would decrease the number of unwanted animals suffering on the street & euthanized in our city shelters by HUGE numbers! Our shelters are underfunded, overcrowded & homeless animals will continue to fill the shelters & be needlessly euthanized if we don't make spay/neuter a priority for every animal in LA. Many heroic rescue organizations are rescuing animals from our city shelters, but adoption alone won't decrease the number of unwanted animals. Fact: One female cat & her offspring can produce up to 24 cats in just 12 months. Fact: A female cat's gestation period is 64 days. Just over 2 months...before she gives birth once pregnant! The typical litter size is 2-4 kittens. Fact: Almost 100% of all feral cats & kittens who enter shelters are immediately euthanized. Fact: Only 2/10 cats are adopted out of shelters and avoid the gas chamber! That is 80% of social, friendly cats who are killed! TNR helps in a multitude of ways: A tom cat can travel up to 10 miles a day in search of a female. Once TNR'd, many males go back to their homes they originated from. The females are spayed/vaccinated and released back into their familar territory. The kittens if young enough, are fostered by volunteers, socialized then put up at private adoptions. The universal sign for a fixed/vaccinated stray cat is a tipped ear. Animal control then knows the cat is not breeding, is being cared for and is not spreading disease. Our volunteers work full time during the day and offer up their help in the evenings to help others and especially the cats! Want to do your heart some good? We're always looking for people to help us get the word out about TNR & spay/neuter! We always need neighborhood fosters for the kittens we rescue & adopters to give them a forever home. Please contact us if you would like to volunteer, foster or donate much needed supplies. HINT: This is a perfect project for cub scouts, boy scouts & girl scouts to earn badges by helping the community! Our dream is to have every neighborhood kitty fixed & in a furrever, loving home!
