Mr. Wilson, murders reported in The Monroe Journal, dates from paper, for dates you seek.
June 1887. Richard Rumbley of Pleasant Ridge was murdered at his store by George Bradley.

September 12, 1895. Killing at Burnt Corn. Paper reported two brothers-in-law, Marion Mixon and Nat Coven, were killed.

July 1897. Ed Hixon was murdered at Hixon Brothers store.

September 17, 1897. George Bradley was hung for the murder of Richard Rumbley.

The murder in 1956 is not accessible after the newspaper reel disappeared from the library. Attempts to find at the Journal office was unsuccessful. Their records do not extend to the 1956 date. Attempts to find at the courthouse is futile. Our records are thrown into the basement with not one degree of organization. Our county needs an archives but the courthouse crowd wants only more holidays and not any effort at maintaining our records.

Age and health now a concern for those of us who left high school in the mid 60s, and I've had my share of "scares", 3 heart attacks and diabetes, slowed my big rump down yet never stopped me. Today, I stopped. My friend of many years told me he wanted me to speak when he dies. I'll not share his name but I am fearful his kinfolks will not enjoy any reminiscing I may recall.

For those in the Alger Sullivan rail line debate, the following may help: Monroe County Deed Book 34, pg. 85: Sale to D.F. Sullivan by J.W. Schloss & J.W. DuBarry on 7/02/1888 for $26,750. for 21400 acres plus or minus. Lands in Township 5, Range 8. Township 6, Range 8, Township 4, Range 8, Township 6, Range 9. Records for Butler Book FF, ppg. 202-205. Conecuh Book G, pg. 103. Crenshaw Book 10, pg. 141. Montgomery Book 7, pg. 374. Escambia Book B, pg. 117. Covington Book 5, ppg 423-427. Monroe Book 11, ppg 514-516.
No record of Escambia Rail Company in Monroe corporation books of the period. Apparently, the line was solely owned by Alger Sullivan, at least in Monroe.

The Alabama Railroad entered Monroe from Conecuh at Sec. 35, T6N, R8E. It passed through sections 26, 23, the NE tip of 22, 15,10,09, and 3. Sullivan owned land in sections 3, 23, and 35. (Locals claim the narrow gauge line entered Monroe in section 35 in an area known as Mous Junction, they claim it went north to Tag. NOTE: There are others who claim the narrow gauge line enterd Monroe west of the mainline.

With question related to rails in Monroe, this sent by a fella from Century, a railroad man, said taken from rail web site.

The Gulf Florida & Alabama was incorporated on February 6th, 1911, but they didn't take over the trackage of the Southern States Lumber Co. until late 1911. The Pensacola to Jonesville (Jones Town) mainline was finished by January 18, 1913 and later finished to Kimbrough, Alabama in 1916. The GF&A would do no more construction and would be placed in receivership on May 9, 1917. The GF&A would continue under a receiver until April 8th, 1922, when it was taken over by the Muscle Shoals, Birmingham & Pensacola Railway. Unable to acquire financing, the Muscle Shoals Company was itself placed under receivership on March 4, 1924 and resold on July 1, 1924 purchased by a Syndicate, which represented the St. Louis-San Francisco RR (Frisco). The railroad was soon rebuilt and the lines were pushed north to a Frisco connection at Amory, Mississippi. By November 14, 1925 the Frisco assume full control of the property, which they operated until the 1980 merger with the Burlington Northern. The BNSF would later sell this line off to the Alabama & Gulf Coast Railway in 1997, a part of RailAmerica.

Monroe County, Ala. 5th Ala. descendants. With the anniversary of Stonewall Jackson's death on May 2, a question arose about the role of the 5th Ala. The 5th Ala. in Rodes Divsion was relieved from the line they held by the NC troops of James Henry Lane. Later, shots from the 18th NC mortally wounded Stonewall. Lane moved to Auburn after the war and taught at East Ala. College, now Auburn. For the AU faithful, can it now be said that an Auburn man killed Stonewall?

Red Hills folks. Got a request for info on location of Liberty Chapel. I believe it may be a name for a church at Tekoa. I base this on the names she provided. Members included Mrs. B.F. Arthur, S.P. and Fate James, both employed at Bear Creek Mill, Charley Stacey, Will Stacey, Walter Gandy. included was an announcement that H.V. Joiner's gristmill was destoyed by heavy rain. Lastly, Mrs. Jay visited her daughter, Ella Dailey. Charlie Stacey and Will Stacey were son and father. Charlie Stacey was married to a Gandy woman. All lived in the vicinity of Tekoa. Anyone have any idea?
