Our club started with an idea to help with beautification in our downtown. We sold Conecuh Smoked Turkeys and Sausage & Bacon Boxes, adopted the Flag Program from the Civitan Club, and applied for a grant. We contracted with a Monroe County native, Ryan Bowen, to design landscape plans for the “new courthouse”, library, and the post office. We started with the library, purchased the plants, and the Garden Club did the hard work. Next was the courthouse which was planned to be done in 3 phases. Thanks to the vision of our immediate past president, Chuck Downing, all the plants for the courthouse were ordered in March and we got started with the entire courthouse plan. Wow, it was much more than our 11 members could get done as quickly as we need to (or before we would all need medical attention), so a crew came in and completed the job. What a difference a few weeks, sweat equity, and lots of plants can make.

Excuse our progress…72 of 1198 plants in and a few weeks of work to go. Our Rotary Club has been working towards this $20,000+ project for 5 years. Thank you for all for your support be it through the Flag program or Conecuh Sausage & Bacon boxes. All funds we raise are spent on projects in Monroe County. A special thanks to the Monroe County Commission for your support and patience!

Today, Rotary of Monroeville delivered Purple Pinkie Donuts to Monroe County Hospital County Hospital, Monroeville Fire / Rescue Department and Monroeville Police Department
So what are a "Purple Pinkie Donuts"?
They are part of Rotary International's mission to "End Polio Now!"
In 2017, Knoxville Rotarian and Dunkin’ franchisee, Dave Baumgartner, started thinking about how he could leverage his 20+ Dunkin’ locations to support World Polio Day and help raise awareness and money to help eradicate Polio worldwide. World Polio Day, which is on October 24th every year, is also sometimes referred to as “Purple Pinkie Day”. This is because during National Immunization Days kids have their pinkies marked with purple ink that lasts for 30 days, to ensure they are not vaccinated more than once. Thus, the Purple Pinkie Donut— glazed donut stick, with a dab of purple icing—was created.
What started in 2018 with the Knoxville area Rotary Clubs, expanded to Rotary Clubs in the State of Tennessee in 2019, the addition of Alabama and Mississippi in 2020, and in 2021 Kansas joined in! A box of donuts is sold for $25.00 and, with matching funds, the donation is multiplied by 7.5 which becomes a $187.50 donation it the fight to eradicate Polio!
Purple Pinkie Donuts have raised $3.2 million dollars since 2018!
With only 2 countries (Afghanistan & Pakistan) reporting a total of 6 polio cases in 2021, we thought we were THIS CLOSE ->

Rotarians from the Monroeville Rotary Club is in the fight to eradicate Polio FOREVER!
The Monroeville Rotary Club marked historic progress toward a polio-free world urging the community to help end the paralyzing disease by participating in the “Purple Pinkie Day” fund raising effort and recognizing World Polio Day, October 24th. The Monroeville Rotary Club recognized Polio’s Eradication Purple Pinkie Day on Monday, October 18th, 2021, when some 24 boxes of pink tipped “Long John” finger shaped donuts were donated to the Monroe County Hospital staff, Monroeville Police Department, Monroe County Sheriffs Department, and Monroeville Fire Department.
When Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988, there were 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries every year. We’ve made great progress against the disease since then. Today, polio cases have been reduced by 99.9 percent, and just two countries continue to report cases of wild poliovirus: Afghanistan and Pakistan. And we remain committed to the end.
Why "Purple Pinkie"? In countries where the threat of polio remains high, every child under age 5 receives polio vaccine by mouth twice per year during events called “National Immunization Days.” When vaccinating millions of children in a short period of
time it is impossible to document which child has received the vaccine, so every child vaccinated has the little finger (pinkie) nail of their left hand painted purple with marker that doesn’t wash off for about a month. Local communities recognize that
children with “purple pinkies” will never get polio which is cause for great celebration.
