NCALEEA Explorer Academy – Day Six

Graduation Day has finally arrived!
After an early morning run and one final obstacle course, it was time for the explorers to prepare for graduation and celebrate the successful completion of an unforgettable week.

Over the past six days, our three explorers have been challenged both mentally and physically. They learned valuable law enforcement skills, strengthened their leadership abilities, built lifelong friendships, and grew together as a team. Through every challenge, they demonstrated determination, resilience, and professionalism.

We couldn’t be more proud of our three explorers, as well as every explorer who completed this year’s NCALEEA Explorer Academy. Watching individuals from across North Carolina and South Carolina come together as one team has been truly inspiring.

Congratulations to Explorer Amy Bello, Explorer Chris Capote, and Explorer Laura Godinez on successfully completing the NCALEEA Explorer Academy!

Thank you to the instructors, advisors, volunteers, and staff who dedicated countless hours to making this academy a success. Your commitment to developing the next generation of law enforcement leaders is greatly appreciated.

And remember "Teamwork and Discipline. Be good or be gone!"

NCALEEA Explorer Academy – Day Five

Yet another outstanding day of training, teamwork, and leadership development is complete at the NCALEEA Explorer Academy!

This morning, our three explorers participated in an early morning run to a local church where hundreds of American flags are displayed in honor of the sacrifices made by our nation’s armed forces. The run continued to the North Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, where everyone paused to reflect and honor the law enforcement officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Following morning flag call and breakfast, both the Basic and Advanced Academy explorers headed to the North Carolina Justice Academy Challenge Course. There, they worked together to overcome a variety of team-building obstacles that tested their communication, trust, and problem-solving abilities. Many of the explorers also challenged themselves on the ropes course.

After lunch, the explorers had the opportunity to see the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office helicopter and several motorcycles from the Raleigh Police Department. Following the helicopter demonstration, the explorers were immediately placed into an active shooter practical exercise, allowing them to apply their training in a realistic, high-stress scenario.

After dinner, the explorers attended a memorial service honoring North Carolina law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. It was a moving and emotional ceremony that reinforced the sacrifices made by those who wear the badge and the true meaning of serving as a law enforcement officer.

Tomorrow is graduation, and we couldn’t be more proud of everything our three explorers have accomplished throughout this incredible week. Their dedication, professionalism, and commitment have been inspiring to watch, and we look forward to celebrating their achievements.

Following morning flag call, the Basic Academy explorers attended classes on Public Speaking and Patrol Techniques, which included hands-on practical exercises. The Advanced Academy explorers participated in a Mock Court exercise based on the traffic stop training from Day Three and later took part in a high-stress building search training scenario.

The day concluded with Drill and Ceremony training, followed by a large-scale team-building exercise that challenged the explorers to work together, communicate effectively, and solve problems as a group.

As the academy continues, our explorers are gaining valuable knowledge, building confidence, and developing skills that will serve them well in the future.

Congrats to Officer Chaney. Officer Chaney was a former Monroe Police Explorer.

The Monroe Police Department’s Employee of the Month is Officer Dillion Chaney.

Officer Chaney began his career with the Monroe Police Department as a patrol officer in January 2020. He is currently assigned as a School Resource Officer at Union Academy.

Officer Chaney was nominated by his supervisor for the outstanding job he does, and most notably for assisting patrol with a situation ending in a good outcome.

On January 9, 2026, officers responded to Secrest Shortcut Road for an attempted su***de. While en-route, information was relayed that a male with special needs had taken an unknown amount of medication and ran off into the woods. With this information, officers attempted a K9 track and deployed drones.

Officer Dillion Chaney was leaving a Union Academy sports event, after working a full day at school. He heard the situation and felt compelled to help as an additional officer/resource.

Officer Chaney circulated that area while other officers were on the K9 track and had drones deployed. Officer Chaney listened to the radio traffic of where the track was headed and was able to locate the individual first. Officer Chaney stayed with the male until other officers and medical personnel could arrive on scene and get him the help he needed.

Officer Chaney is appreciated in his role at Union Academy as well as going above and beyond to help in this situation.
