💙 A Real Story of Hope 💙
"My first night in my apartment, I just couldn't stop smiling!"
I was so happy that I just couldn't stop smiling. I went to bed smiling and woke up smiling even though I was here by myself. My apartment is completely empty but that's fine, it's so much better than trying to figure out where I'm going to sleep so I can avoid another trespassing charge."
For years, this individual lived with untreated schizophrenia, PTSD, and depression. Mental health challenges prevented access to emergency shelter and made daily life overwhelming.
"I don't understand why everyone is so afraid of me. It's probably my facial expressions or my body movements, and I must look scary. But it's just me, and I'm not dangerous. I'm the one that is usually afraid of everything."
When we first met him, he was homeless, without health insurance, an ID card, a Social Security card, or any source of income. He was struggling with partially amputated feet and had even been permanently banned from the city bus system due to behaviors related to untreated mental illness.
Today, his story looks very different.
✅ Housed in his own apartment
✅ Receiving treatment and participating in therapy
✅ Health insurance obtained
✅ ID card and Social Security card replaced
✅ Income established
✅ Scheduled to see a podiatrist next week for ongoing foot care
✅ Transportation provided through a bicycle generously donated by "The Knights of Columbus"
This is what homelessness often looks like. It isn't laziness. It isn't a lack of desire to do better. Sometimes it's untreated mental illness, trauma, missing documents, lack of transportation, health problems, and a system that can be difficult to navigate alone.
What changed?
Someone took the time to see the person behind the circumstances.
