We just got the first Local 488 challenge coins in hand, and they look incredible. But here is the catch: you can’t buy them.

The only way to get your hands on one of these is to step up and earn it. That’s the challenge. To secure a coin, you need to come out and volunteer at one of our events.

Last week, we proudly hosted the 5th Tony Soter Memorial Golf Tournament. We are deeply grateful to everyone who came together to raise charitable funds and celebrate Tony's life. While we lost him to cancer much too soon, his spirit continues to inspire us to make a positive impact. Thank you to our volunteers, sponsors, and participants for your continued support and generosity!

Brothers and Sisters, we regret to inform you that Local 488 Brother Kenneth Clarke passed away unexpectedly on July 20. Brother Clarke loved the IBEW and the brotherhood that came with our Union. Please keep the Clarke family in your thoughts and prayers.

Friends may call on Thursday, July 30, 2026 at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main Street, Winsted from 5 – 7 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, July 31, 2026 at St. Joseph Church, Winsted at 11 AM. Burial will be held at a later date.

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, we have a couple of great ways to get together and enjoy the summer weather.

Friday Night: Softball Doubleheader - Kick off your weekend by coming out Friday Night (July 17) to support the Local 488 Softball team! We are playing a doubleheader in Shelton. Bring your friends, grab a seat in the bleachers, and let's make some noise for our players.

Stratford Blues on the Beach Concert – Saturday (July 18) Get ready for some live music down at Short Beach in Stratford. If you are interested in attending or already planned on attending, we have 3 parking passes available exclusively for our members.

• Note: These are strictly first-come, first-served, so don't wait to claim yours!

"A republic, if you can keep it." — Benjamin Franklin

As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, Franklin’s famous challenge feels as relevant as it did in 1787. "Keeping" a republic isn’t just about shared ideals—it requires the literal, exhausting work of building and maintaining a nation.

That heavy lifting has always been carried by the working class. When the IBEW was founded in 1891, it brought safety, dignity, and collective strength to the people tasked with electrifying this country. The broader labor movement didn’t just fight for fair wages; it built the middle class that actually sustains a democracy.

From the ink on the Constitution to the sprawling electrical grids that power our modern lives, America has always been a massive, ongoing construction project. We keep this republic by continuing to build it, wire by wire, generation by generation.

Happy 250th, America. Let’s get back to work.⚡️✊
