⚙️ Tractor History Maker of the Week: Rock Island Plow Company (Heider Tractor Division)
🌾 Founded in 1885 in Rock Island, Illinois, the Rock Island Plow Company began as a trusted maker of horse-drawn implements before stepping boldly into tractor production in the early 1900s. When it acquired the Heider Tractor Company in 1914, it set out to make mechanized farming simple, smooth, and dependable.
Here are a few interesting facts about this Midwestern powerhouse:
1. 🧠 The Heider Tractor featured a unique friction-drive transmission that let farmers shift speeds without grinding gears — an innovation far ahead of its time.
2. 🛠️ Rock Island offered a range of rugged tractors built for the family farm, combining simplicity, power, and serviceability.
3. 💔 Despite strong engineering, the company couldn’t survive the Great Depression and closed in 1937, but its mechanical ideas lived on in later Minneapolis-Moline designs.
From plows to power, Rock Island helped bridge the gap between horse-drawn equipment and modern tractors — leaving behind a legacy of ingenuity.

🛢 Tractor History Maker of the Week: Rumely (OilPull)
🌾 Founded in 1894 in La Porte, Indiana, Advance-Rumely Company built some of the most iconic early tractors in America. Their famous OilPull tractors ran on kerosene, making them cheaper to operate than their gasoline competitors.
Here are a few interesting facts about Rumely’s iron giants:
1. 🔥 The Rumely OilPull was known for its unique hot-bulb engine, started by lighting a torch to heat the ignition chamber.
2. 🚜 The OilPull was so reliable that some farmers ran them well into the 1940s — decades after production ended.

Rumely tractors were loud, smoky, and unstoppable — the true workhorses of early mechanized farming.

🟠 Tractor History Maker of the Week: Co-op Tractors (National Farm Machinery Cooperative)
🌾 Formed in 1936 in Shelbyville, Indiana, Co-op Tractors were built by farmers, for farmers — part of a nationwide movement to make machinery affordable through cooperative ownership.
Here are a few interesting facts about this grassroots brand:
1. 🚜 Co-op tractors were often built by Cockshutt in Canada and rebadged for American co-ops.
2. ⚙️ The Co-op Model E3 (a twin to the Cockshutt 30) was one of the first tractors with a live PTO, giving farmers constant implement power.
3. 🌾 The co-op system allowed farmers to buy, sell, and service equipment collectively, long before “crowdsourcing” was a thing.
Although the National Farm Machinery Cooperative dissolved in the 1950s, its bright orange tractors remain a symbol of community ingenuity and farmer independence.

⚙️ Tractor History Maker of the Week: Ferguson
🌾 Founded in 1938 in Detroit, Michigan, Ferguson was the creation of visionary inventor Harry Ferguson, whose ideas transformed the tractor industry. His genius? The three-point hitch — a simple, revolutionary system that allowed implements to rise and fall with the tractor hydraulics.
Here are a few interesting facts about this game-changing brand:
1. ⚙️ Ferguson’s 1939 partnership with Henry Ford produced the legendary Ford-Ferguson 9N tractor — one of the most famous tractors ever built.
2. 🌾 The three-point hitch became the global standard, still used on nearly every tractor made today.
3. 🔩 After parting ways with Ford in 1947, Ferguson merged with Massey-Harris in 1953, forming Massey Ferguson — a name that still dominates the fields.
Harry Ferguson once said, “The farm tractor is not a luxury — it’s the farmer’s right hand.” His innovation made that true for millions.
