Grand Marshal: Thomas Crews
Tom Crews was born March 12, 1944, in Pine Bluff, Ark. He grew up in Monroe and graduated from Ouachita Parish High School. He comes from a family of veterans; both of his brothers served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Tom enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1962 as a jet fighter mechanic. His first assignment was to Perrin AFB Sherman, TX with the 4780th Organization Maintenance Squadron. Perrin was a pilot training base. Tom served as a jet fighter mechanic and crew-chief on a TF-102A aircraft.
In the Summer of 1965, the US was building up forces in Southeast Asia. Tom received orders to Korat Air Base in Thailand with the 6234th Combat Support Group. He worked on the flight line maintaining and arming F-105 Thunderchief fighter aircraft. Later he was assigned to the “Tank Farm” responsible for constructing external fuel tanks for the F-105s and later the new F-4c Phantoms as they deployed to Korat Air Base.
Upon returning to Perrin, AFB Tom was promoted to A1C and assigned as shift supervisor on Pre-Flight for F flight. He completed his active-duty service on Aug 15, 1966, and transferred to the US Air Force Reserve until Aug 15, 1968. He returned to Monroe and in November 1966 he began a long and rewarding career with United Gas Pipeline Co. He maintained employment there until his retirement on March 28, 2008.
While his son was in his formative years, Tom coached Dixie League Youth ball. He remembers those years fondly and is still often called coach by former players and now their kids. He experienced great personal loss through the deaths of his daughter (1995), son (2020) and wife (2021) over the years. With most of his family gone, he has found a new family in VFW Post 1809. He is very appreciative to Post Commander Chris LeGuin and his wife, Stepheni, for their commitment to this community of veterans.
