When the new high school is demolished years hence, to make way for a structure in keeping with a more advanced age, a sealed box placed in the cornerstone, will reveal a few exhibits of contempor- ary interests.
The contests of the old lead box, taken from the Union school building which with the Macomb school occupied the present site of the new high school, were placed in a copper box, sealed by
John Schwingschlegl.
Items cached in the cornerstone include: a copy of the Monroe Commercial. for June 17, 1858; the Monroe National Press for June 23, 1858; a copy of a local German newspaper, dated June 22, 1858; five handwritten sheets, giving in- formation about the city and country governments of that period: and nineteen coins. These were all found in the 70-year-old box.
Among other things placed in the air-and moisture-proof box are: a copy of the Monroe Evening News for May 16, 1927, telling, of the pioneering trans-Atlantic flight of Colonel Charles Lindbergh; and pictures and stories of the new high school, in the Monroe Even- ing News for May 26, 1927.
The person who experiences the thrill of opening the box, perhaps a century from now, will read a let- ter addressed to him by R. H. Sprague, secretary of the board.
