Today, the Monroe County Young Marines were honored to partner with the Monroe VFW Post 1138 for a Flag Day retirement ceremony.
Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the United States flag on June 14, 1777, and serves as a reminder of the freedoms, sacrifices, and values our flag represents. It is also a time to honor our nation's flag through traditions such as proper flag retirement ceremonies.
Together, we respectfully retired three American flags that had faithfully served their purpose. One of those flags held special meaning—it was retired by YM/Sgt Annabelle Lucas and had been flying at the home of AV Ashlee Hoffman, Nicholas Hawk, and YM/Pvt Nova Hoffman on the day of their house fire in July 2025.
Thank you to Monroe VFW Post 1138 for allowing our Young Marines to participate in this important tradition of honoring our nation's flag with the dignity and respect it deserves.
