FRIENDS & FAMILY:
If you didn’t know, there has been an attack on the implementation of critical race theory in schools over the last four months. Critical race theory asserts that the U.S. social institutions (e.g., the criminal justice system, education system, labor market, housing market, and healthcare system) are laced with racism embedded in laws, regulations, rules, and procedures that lead to differential outcomes by race. Currently, legislators in 8 states (Idaho, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Iowa, New Hampshire, Arizona, and South Carolina) have passed “anti-Critical Race Theory” legislation. The legislations mostly ban the discussion, training, and/or orientation that the U.S. is inherently racist as well as any discussions about conscious and unconscious bias, privilege, discrimination, and oppression. These parameters also extend beyond race to include gender lectures and discussions. Nearly 20 additional states have introduced or plan to introduce similar legislation.
Some arguments being made include the fear of children learning things in school that they do not have the “capacity” to address.
This argument does nothing but completely disregard the very real and lived experiences of all students, while also exemplifying the privilege given to ✨ some ✨ parents of not being required to have discussions about race or gender relations with their children. Why is it typical that the first time a white cis student is introduced to race and gender relations is at a college or university? Why is it that state governments are trying to conceal the way in which race and gender operate within our society? As if their precedents aren’t the ones who constructed these concepts to produce disparate outcomes?
Join us and our friends at on Saturday, August 28th to rally against this injustice and .
