Mitch was hospitalized in January of 2021 with what seemed to be a manageable medical condition. In the weeks that followed Mitch underwent several medical procedures resulting in a diagnosis of stage 4 colon cancer. On February 8, 2021, while in the very same hospital as Mitch, Sarah gave birth to their daughter, Reese Michelle Teta. The time that followed was a roller coaster ride for the Teta
family. Mitch’s condition fluctuated, but Reese always lit the way with every smile and every milestone, including her first words, first steps, and even a trip to Yankee Stadium, among many others. The strength and determination of Mitch and Sarah during this time was awe inspiring. August 5, 2022 we held our first Golf Tournament to support Mitch and his family. Mitch spoke that day referencing Retired Navy Seal Jocko Willink comparison of the tale of Sisyphus’ to life’s daily challenges. As Sisyphus would near the top of the hill, Zeus would push it back to the bottom. Here is an excerpt from Mitch’s speech, including a quote from Jocko Willink:
“The term Sisyphean means a task that can never be completed. I don't want to rest. I don't want to coast, and I don't want to reach a point in my life where I say that’s it, I've done enough, I’m not going to give any more, I’m not going to push anymore. That relentless cycle of day to day challenges; they aren't maddening to me. They don’t frustrate me. They inspire me. They inspire me to drive, and to push more, and to push harder. That’s what that rock does to me. So I say dig in and get to pushing. None of us really know what the future holds. This may be a battle that I can’t win and I may be Sisyphus. But if you all keep supporting me I’ll keep pushing the rock.”
Mitch’s battle came to an end on September 19, 2022. In tribute to Mitch, we are here to keep pushing that rock for Mitch, and others battling cancer.
