The Eagle Nebula, or Messier 16 captured by member Bruce Curry, is one of the brightest nebulae in the night sky, and is visible from both the northern and southern hemispheres. It is located in the constellation Serpens and is approximately 7000 light years away from Earth. This nebula was made famous by the Hubble Space Telescope, which photographed a portion of it called the "Pillars of Creation." The best time to view or photograph the nebula from mid-northern latitudes is from June to September.
This image was photographed on seven separate nights from August 20 through September 1, 2026. Two different filters were utilized in capturing the light frames. An Askar D2 SII/OIII filter accounted for 128, 300sec subframes, and an Optolong L-Ultimate Ha/OIII filter accounted for 141, 300sec subframes, for a total of a little over 22 hours of integration time. The data from the two filters were then combined and processed in Pixinsight and then further processed in Photoshop to arrive at the final image.
