The Greater Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is creating an Active Transportation Plan for Dane County. We love this comment map! You can click on any bike or ped icon and see the comment for feedback or suggested improvements. 💡

The plan will help shape the future of biking, walking, and rolling in our region and serve as a tool for making these travel options safer, more comfortable, and better connected.

As part of this effort, we asked community members to share their experiences through a short survey and by adding pins to this online map. Each pin shows a place that people said is working well—or an area that could be improved.

The survey and map are now closed, but the results are still available. This information will help planners and local leaders make decisions that improve how people get around.

As more people are dusting off their bikes and going for walks, we’ll see an uptick in incidents.

A biker reached out to us asking how to report an infrastructure hazard after they rolled over a storm drain, like the one in this photo.

Can you imagine what would happen being on a bike with narrow tires and rolling over (your front wheel falling into) a storm drain like this? You guessed it, supermanning over your handlebars. 😵

Fortunately, the biker recovered from his injuries and reported the drain cover to the city. The city replaced that cover but there are still some out there so please be aware. This photo was taken at the corner of Dean and Shore Acres.

Tucking and rolling is the best way to handle a crash like this. Below are some tips on how to do it if you’re in this unfortunate situation.

•Anticipate and let go: As you realize you're going over the handlebars, try to let go of the handlebars and unclip from the pedals if you're using clipless pedals.

•Tuck your head and chin: Bend your head forward, tucking your chin towards your chest, to protect your head and neck.

•Tuck your arms: Bring your arms in close to your body, bending your elbows to protect them from impact.
Roll diagonally: Imagine rolling diagonally across your back, from one shoulder down to the opposite hip, to help distribute the impact.

•Keep rolling: Continue rolling as the momentum carries you, trying to stay tucked in and avoid landing directly on your spine.

ALERT: We’ve received some reports from bike commuters that there have been frequent sightings of nails and screws in the bike lane on Monona Drive near the new development on the corner of Monona Drive and Dean Avenue.

Please keep an eye out as you bike through this area. Let’s keep those bikes upright!

The proposed Madison Metro route will be reviewed at a public hearing on July 31 at 6 PM. What do you think? Do buses, bikes and peds on a stretch of Winnequah Road with no bike infrastructure make for a safe experience for all non-motorized users?

A major bike route that sees up to 1,000 riders on a nice summer weekend day with no sidewalks, no bike lanes, and parked cars, sounds alarming. 🚳🚷‼️Please make your voice heard at the link below for public feedback.
