Community support is crucial to the success of OHSET. Our program is 100% funded by our athletes, their families, and the generous sponsorships of local businesses. Every contribution—big or small—directly impacts the students who work hard all season to represent their school, care for their horses, and grow as athletes.
Many people don’t realize the true cost of owning, leasing, and caring for a competition-ready horse. Here’s a quick look at what families take on each year to make OHSET possible:
🐴 The Real Cost of Owning a Horse
(Average annual estimate — can vary by location and horse needs)
🔹 Board (full care): $4,800–$9,600 per year ($400–$800/month)
🔹 Hay & Grain (if self-boarded): $1,500–$3,000 per year
🔹 Farrier (trims or shoes): $400–$1,200 per year
🔹 Veterinary care:
• Routine vaccines: $150–$300
• Dental: $150–$300
• Emergency care: $500–$3,000+ (unexpected)
🔹 Tack & equipment: $300–$2,000+
🔹 Horse trailer/transport: varies widely
🔹 Training or lessons: $1,000–$3,500 per year
🔹 OHSET expenses (fees, travel, gear): additional seasonal cost
