⚠️The Town of Monmouth is issuing a warning to its residents and local businesses about a fraudulent email scam.
🚨The scam emails falsely claim to be from the Town of Monmouth Planning Division. However, these emails are sent from the address [email protected], which is not a legitimate Town of Monmouth email address.
📧The fraudulent emails include a fake invoice attachment requesting a wire transfer payment.
‼️It is crucial to note that Monmouth's Planning Board, the Town Planner, and/or the Code Enforcement Officer would never request payment via wire transfer. These fraudulent emails are designed to appear official, but they have no connection to the Town of Monmouth.
Tips To Protect Yourself:
1. Do not assume emails are legitimate based on the use of Town letterhead, seals, names of officials, or proper spelling and grammar.
2. Verify the email address, including the domain name, matches the email address of the official with whom you are corresponding and does not contain extraneous characters or misspellings.
3. Check the Town's official website for notices about ongoing impersonation schemes.
4. Call the Town, using the phone number listed on the official website, to verify any outstanding fees.
If you have sent money or believe you have been scammed, contact the Monmouth Police Department.
All official Town of Monmouth emails come from an official .gov email address.
If you receive a suspicious email about planning application fees or have doubts about an email's authenticity, don't hesitate to contact the Town Office at 207-481-9400.
