Let’s meet the 2026 Monhegan Residents:

Audrey Robidoux is an Artist and an Art Educator whose work serves as a bridge between the precision of scientific inquiry and the fluid elegance of the decorative arts. Drawing inspiration from botanical illustrations and floriography, Audrey explores the silent language of the natural world through a lens of deep symbolism. Their practice is characterized by a meticulous attention to detail and a rhythmic use of line, often framing organic subjects in structured, ornamental compositions. By weaving together the visual beauty of a plant with its secret meanings, Audrey hopes to encourage the act of looking closely at all of the small details, engaging the mind to connect the details and solve the riddle of the meaning behind the piece. She chooses to work in the medium of watercolor as a nod to botanical illustrations, and due to the technical challenge of it, the puzzle involved to create such a complex piece with layers and fine detail.

Audrey Robidoux is an Artist and Art Teacher residing in Portland, Maine. She graduated from Maine College of Art & Design in 2021 with a Masters in Art Education as well as in 2019 with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Painting and a minor in Art History.

Let’s meet the 2026 Monhegan Residents:

Nathan Allard, a painter from Maine, has a strong connection with the natural world both in compositions and materials. Allard’s medium of choice, egg tempera, is a traditional and painstaking technique that dates back to the Egypt and Renaissance masters, notably used prior to the rise of oil painting. This medium offers a unique sense of luminescence and depth. His watercolor works showcase a more spontaneous fluidity, providing a contrast to the tightness of his tempera pieces.
The materials Allard uses are a testament to his commitment to nature. Handmaking most of his tempera pigments he blends sustainability with artistic expression. In his painting, the past and the present merge through his mediums and subjects, creating a dialogue between age-old techniques and our current era.

Welcome Nathan!

Meet Haley Nannig, our second artist resident of the season! Here, she shares some reflections from the experience:

I came to Monhegan Island immediately after completing several year-long projects, finishing up my first year as a full-time professor, feeling disheartened with the state of the world, and ultimately facing burnout. Monhegan Artist Residency provided me with concentrated time to work, experiment, and recharge. It felt like the greatest gift and privilege to be on the island painting during the longest summer days, in a golden hour-filled studio.

I spent my time experimenting with my sewing machine, painting on silk, sculpting frames, and using oils to paint from observation. I read a lot, spent hours on the deck, and explored miles of hiking. It was the pause and creative push I needed at what felt like the perfect time.

I found myself very interested in the harsh, jagged cliffs and the island’s edges. Some of my favorite time spent was talking with and reading about artists and people who came before me on Monhegan. Staying in the Miller Cottage alone was a little slice of history. The island taught me more than I could have imagined in two weeks, and I have a feeling I’ll keep learning from my time spent at Monhegan Artist Residency.

thank you, Haley, for all you shared with our community!

Meet , the first of MARC's three 2025 Residents - we invite you to spend some with her reflections:

In 1995, I had the honor and privilege of being chosen as one of the recipients of the 1995 Monhegan Artist Residency. At the time, my five children were still living at home - the five weeks on the island offered an unheard-of opportunity to make work, and it was magical.

Every morning I awoke to the smell of coffee coming up through the floorboards from the Carina Café below and the chatter of the day’s first customers. I hosted figure drawing groups in my studio and invited local folks to sit for portraits. I completed a series of mixed-media portraits of year rounders and visitors, included in the final exhibit in my studio.

I’ve often fantasized about going back and doing it over again, so imagine how elated I was to receive a call from MARC President Leith MacDonald congratulating me that I had been chosen as one of the 2025 Residents!

The week before I was supposed to begin my residency, I became quite sick with the flu, which delayed my arrival on island. When I finally made my way, I was feeling subpar, and I decided to pay attention to a Tarot card that kept showing up in my daily readings: the Temperance card.

The message was to be gentle with myself and to do things in moderation.  I realized that this residency would be more internal and reflective than my first.

The Miller Cottage, where I stayed, was built in 1904: a quintessential Monhegan Summer home, full of history. The shelves of the house are filled with old oil lamps, antique ceramics, and gorgeous old seashells.

I decided to create a mixed-media series using these objects as drawing prompts. The resulting Postcards from Monhegan are collages of sorts; a layering of objects, landscape, birds and animals, dream imagery, and memory. As my energy returned, I started a series of self-portraits, too.

I took dozens of photographs of the island, which will feed me creatively for a long time. My biggest takeaway is the reminder to dedicate more time to my home studio.

Monhegan is a magical place, AND so is my backyard.

I’m so grateful to be a Maine artist!
