The U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service is continuing to explore options to mitigate flooding of Kelley Creek. The NRCS is exploring a number of options, which could include water retention systems, an updated creek channel, and other measures aimed at reducing downtown flooding in Monett.
As part of that ongoing effort, the organization has contracted with Terracon to conduct Cultural resource fieldwork in the Monett area beginning Monday, January 12, 2026.

Freedom Silo - Monett, Missouri

The Freedom Silo in Monett, Missouri is one of those landmarks you can’t miss. The structure itself is about 130 years old, built around 1890, and for most of its life it was just an old grain silo by the railroad tracks. That changed in 2020, when Monett Main Street brought in muralist Raine Clotfelter, known as “America’s Muralist,” to transform it. He finished the massive eagle-and-flag mural on October 10, 2020. Today the 55-foot-tall, silo stands as a bold patriotic landmark and one of Monett’s most recognizable pieces of public art. What was once a forgotten agricultural structure is now a symbol of pride, history, and small-town identity.

Monett’s Loose Leaf Pick-Up begins Monday, Dec. 1.
Community members are being asked to help ensure the pick-up goes safely and smoothly.
Leaves should be placed at the curb, as close to the street as possible without pushing leaves into the street or gutter. Community members should also be careful to ensure that there is no brush, metal or rocks in leaf piles, as these materials will damage city equipment and prolong the pickup effort. If city crews see any brush, rocks, metal or other unacceptable debris in the leaf pile, they will skip that home.
Community members should also avoid mulching leaves, especially if there is rain forecast prior to pick-up, as the wet, mulched leaves will clog the leaf pick-up equipment.
Residents should also be sure they do not park vehicles in front of leaf piles during pickup. While crews are busy collecting leaves, residents should keep small children and pets away from the equipment and watch from a safe distance.
