🇺🇸 Flag Day – Honor Our Flag Through Proper Retirement 🇺🇸

On June 14, Americans will celebrate Flag Day, commemorating the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as our nation’s flag in 1777. The American flag is more than a piece of cloth—it is a symbol of our freedom, our history, and the sacrifices made by generations of Americans who have defended it.

Over time, flags become faded, torn, worn, or otherwise unserviceable. When this happens, the United States Flag Code calls for the flag to be retired in a dignified manner, traditionally through a ceremonial burning conducted with honor and respect.

The members of American Legion Post 154, Mondovi invite you to participate in this important tradition. If you have an unserviceable American flag that is no longer fit for display, please place it in one of the flag retirement collection boxes located at:

• Hansen’s IGA
• Alliance Bank
• Zion Lutheran Church

Collected flags will be respectfully retired during the Post’s Flag Retirement Ceremony on Flag Day, June 14, 2026.

Rather than discarding an American flag in the trash, allow it to receive the dignity and respect it deserves through proper retirement.

Every retired flag represents a story—of service, sacrifice, patriotism, and pride. By participating in this tradition, you help preserve the respect owed to our nation’s most recognized symbol.

Thank you for helping us honor Old Glory and preserve the traditions that make our nation strong.

For the Honor Flight Network, Memorial Day is a solemn day of collective remembrance, a pause to honor the extraordinary men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while wearing the uniform of the United States.

While the Honor Flight mission focuses on expressing gratitude to living veterans by bringing them to Washington, D.C., Memorial Day serves as a poignant reminder of why those memorials were built in the first place.

The granite pillars of the World War II Memorial, the silent statues of the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the deeply etched names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial do not just represent chapters in a history book. They represent classmates, brothers-in-arms, friends, and loved ones who never made the journey back home to American soil.

When we bring our Honor Flight veterans to these national memorials, we see the healing impact of remembering the fallen. A veteran touching a name on the Vietnam Wall – or staring silently at a gold star – isn't just looking at a physical monument. That veteran is remembering a face, a voice, and a life cut short in service to our nation.

Ultimately, honoring America’s veterans also means remembering those who served and are no longer with us. This Memorial Day, we are reminded of our “why” – the reason Honor Flight has the enormous and distinct privilege of celebrating these heroes in the first place.

A grateful nation must never forget the courage, the sacrifices, and the selflessness of those who have gone before us.

What a beautiful Memorial Day in Mondovi as our community came together under sunny skies to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. 🇺🇸

With more than 200 guests in attendance, today’s parade and ceremony were filled with patriotism, reflection, and community pride. We were honored to recognize veterans from multiple generations, including Duane Klopp, a 100-year-old World War II veteran, and Edward Mahlum, a Korean War veteran — both proud members of American Legion Post 154 for more than 75 years.

Thank you to everyone who helped make today so meaningful:

🇺🇸 The Mondovi High School Band for providing patriotic music throughout the day
🇺🇸 Rob Haidvogel for serving as our guest speaker and sharing heartfelt remarks
🇺🇸 Marvin Moy for the Reading of the Fallen
🇺🇸 Quin Sandberg for an outstanding presentation of the Gettysburg Address
🇺🇸 Jim Williams and Laurie Nichols for the Wreath Presentation
🇺🇸 Randy Crank for the raising of the flag to full staff
🇺🇸 Quin Sandberg and Ellie Osenga for their participation in the ceremony
🇺🇸 Marvin Moy, Galen Aase, Rob Haidvogel, Ellie Osenga, and Quin Sandberg for their moving performance of The Star-Spangled Banner
🇺🇸 Ed Mahlum, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 154, and the Girl Scouts for participating in the parade

A sincere thank you also goes out to all veterans, families, volunteers, Legion members, Auxiliary members, Scouts, students, and community members who attended and helped preserve the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Today was more than a parade or ceremony — it was a reminder that freedom is never free and that those who gave everything for our country will never be forgotten.

❤️🤍💙 We will remember
