Embrace the Hills

Embrace the Hills Annual autumn bike ride along the Iowa Loess Hills. This is a wonderful fund raiser for our local food pantry, Matthew House.

One cyclist wrote, "This ride was amazing! Beautiful scenery, very well-marked routes, excellent maps, great start and end environment, amazing food!" Another biker said, "Beautiful route, food everywhere! You nailed it!"

Two route choices: 28 and 59 miles... For our 7th annual Embrace the Hills, ride at your own pace through the Loess Hills of Western Iowa. Our 28-mile route (same route as past

years) has mild hills and is very do-able for even the beginner cyclist. The experienced cyclist will find challenges on this route, too. After the 28 miles (and snacks and lunch, etc.) cyclists are invited to continue the ride with an additional 31 miles of more challenging hills. FREE delicious meals and snacks available from start to finish (at the Mondamin Community Center in Mondamin) and pocket-able proteins available at each rest stop. This fully-supported ride includes SAG wagon and on-site bike mechanic at the Mondamin Community Center. Registration will open at 8:00 a.m., and the ride officially starts at 9:00 a.m. However, cyclists may begin their ride at any time. Staff will be available from 8:00 a.m. until the last cyclist arrives back at the Mondamin Community Center.

These two cyclists, Dean and his son Nate, have just climbed the last hill on the Embrace route. Murray Hill, one of the highest points in Harrison county, gives a breathtaking view of the flat expanse of Nebraska. (You can see hilly Iowa in the background of the photo.)

Notice for this Saturday, September 20:

The railroad has been repairing this crossing in Mondamin, and I spoke with DOT today and they said it should be done Saturday morning.
..However, it probably will NOT be done before you drive your VEHICLE into Mondamin to start your bicycle ride. Watch for a BRIEF DETOUR if you're coming from the interstate. That will get you to the Mondamin community center where the ride begins and ends.

By the time cyclists have finished their rides, the crossing should be open.
