Quad Cities Ballet Folklorico

Quad Cities Ballet Folklorico The Quad Cities Ballet Folklorico (QCBF) is a non-profit organization that teaches the Mexican culture through the art form of dance. Mr.

The Quad Cities Ballet Folklorico was founded in 1984 by Arnulfo Camarillo with the help of his wife, Beatriz Camarillo. After studying folklore dance at the Universidad de Guadalara in Jalisco, Mexico, Arnulfo returned to the United States with aspirations to keep this Hispanic culture and its rich traditions alive. He achieved exactly that and accomplished so much more. Camarillo was first given

the task to form a group as a Mother's Day gift for the mothers in the local area. The original group consisted of about 15 determined kids. After Mother's Day, the kids wanted to learn more and Arnulfo was happy to keep teaching. Throughout the years, the QCBF has welcomed students from a variety of backgrounds to join in their mission to express the Hispanic culture through dance and music. Soon these young kids were performing traditional dances from the states such as Nayarit, Veracruz, Nuevo Leon, and the popular Jalisco. The QCBF have performed at many local events including Viva Quad Cities, Cinco de Mayo Fiestas, and the Festival of Trees. However, they have also had the opportunity to perform in other states such as Indiana and Arizona. The QCBF also has had the privilege to host numerous professional dancers from surrounding areas as well as Mexico. These would be informative workshops designed to instruct new dance steps and choreography. Not only do the workshops introduce new traditional dances, but it also presents a learning environment at a professional level. These workshops in conjunction with the hard work and dedication of the students and parents allow the QCBF to continue their reputation as a well known local area attraction. Ray Terronez Jr, a QCBF alum, has been serving as the Director since 2008. He is accompanied by fellow QCBF Alums, Sonia Herrera and Andrea Martinez. Even after all of these years, the QCBF’s mission is to give our dancers and the community, the knowledge of this beautiful Hispanic culture and to keep it strong for generations to come.

We were honored to receive the Cultural Legacy Award from Mercado On Fifth at last night’s ceremony of 10 years. To everyone at Mercado - Frances Williams, Antonio Varela, Maria Ontiveros, to all the board and staff - we really appreciate this award. Thank you for always being there for us!
________________
First and foremost, we want to give credit to our founder, Arnulfo Camarillo. If it wasn’t for his passion and vision to share folklorico dance, we would not be here. But also – his examples of selfless, unwavering determination to give back to his community is something that still flows through us, as instructors and staff.

Often, we shock people - when we tell them that this is not our actual job. All of us at QCBF are volunteers with a lot of other things going on. With that being said - we want to thank our significant others who sometimes take on more than their fair share. I also want to thank our staff – Instructors, Fundraising Committee, Costume Design Team, and Board Members. Lastly, our amazing students and their parents – past and present - who continue to support us throughout the years. We fully appreciate this award from Mercado, it’s a nice reminder that our efforts matter and that we are making our community proud.

A highlight performance to remember indeed! It’s not every day, you get to share the stage with professional Folklorico dancers, let alone the premier Maestro Miguel Angel Peña Caballero, the only the first tenure-track Professor of Folklórico Dance in the United States, running the only Ballet Folklórico dance major in the US. Muchas muchas gracias - Miguel, Emanuel, Rolie, Ramiro, Jackie, Lizzy, Maria, y Delia from Ballet Folklorico del Rio Grande! Your passion for folklorico have taken you around the world including into the hearts of our students. Thank you for sharing and showcasing the beauty of Mexico.

It was great to see the UTHS Mariachi and Glenview Mariachi together as well as BFRG dancing alongside them. A fantastic collaboration! Great job kids, Sra. Minard, and Sra. Hill!!

Ben Gougeon from Quad City Arts started planning this event around September of last year. A huge appreciation to him and his staff for putting this entire event together. It is unmeasured how important organizations like QC Arts is and for them to continue putting on events like this - it has the ability to change the trajectory of our youth. You are making a difference and we thank you for all of your efforts.

We are so proud of our students and staff. We threw a challenge at the kids and they responded very well! Hearing compliments from the audience and hearing gritos from our dancers - it was definitely a night of Mexican pride but also QC pride. And the cherry on top was a huddle of all the dancers including BFRG and breaking out to Q-C-B-F!! 👏🏽
