Jim Nelson Presents on the Moline Rotary Foundation

Jim Nelson was the featured speaker at Monday’s Moline Rotary meeting, sharing the story and mission of the Moline Rotary Foundation.

Established in 2015, the Foundation was created as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to help support community needs through literacy efforts, special projects, scholarships, and other local initiatives.

The Foundation gives Moline Rotary another way to make a lasting impact by supporting projects that strengthen the community and reflect Rotary’s commitment to service above self.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: In the 1940s, Rotary clubs operated very differently than they do today. One of the defining traditions of Rotary International was the “classification” system — allowing only one representative from each profession or business category in a club.

This incredible page from the May 3, 1943 edition of The Dispatch in Moline shows exactly how that worked in real life. Each ad proudly identifies a Rotarian not just by name, but by their classification:

banker
attorney
florist
contractor
retailer

In many ways, Rotary was designed to be a cross-section of the entire community. The idea was that if you gathered trusted leaders from every profession into one room, they could work together to improve their city while building friendships and ethical business relationships.

You can even see that pride reflected in the ads themselves — “Moline’s Rotarian Banker,” “Rotarian Phil Palmgren,” and others representing their industries and businesses throughout the community.

Today, Rotary clubs can have multiple members from the same profession, but the old classification tradition still explains a lot about Rotary culture and why clubs valued having leaders from all walks of community life.

Members of the Moline Rotary Club recently learned more about the Moline Police Department’s Moline Police PoDCast, a community policing initiative launched by Moline Police Chief Darren Gault to help keep the community informed and connected.

Moline Rotary President Eric VanWinkle highlighted the successful outreach effort on behalf of Chief Gault during a recent Rotary meeting.

Now in its third season, the Moline Police PoDCast is hosted by Chief Gault and veteran Detective Mike Griffin. The podcast covers a wide variety of topics involving law enforcement, public safety, criminal investigations, community partnerships, and local history through conversations with guests from throughout the Quad Cities region.

Currently, there are more than 40 episodes available in the Moline Police PoDCast library. The most recent guest featured on the podcast was Moline Rotarian Dougal Nelson, retired Executive Director of Junior Achievement of the Heartland.

The first episode of the podcast, recorded more than two years ago, featured retired Moline Police Chief and Moline Rotarian Gary Francque. Francque helped launch the series by sharing a historical overview of policing in the Moline community and discussing the evolution of law enforcement over the years.

Since its launch, the podcast has featured many interesting conversations regarding current and past criminal investigations, officer experiences, public safety issues, and other subjects of community interest.

The Moline Police PoDCast can be found on many popular podcast platforms, through the Moline Police Department page, and on the City of Moline website.

The Moline Rotary Club welcomed Todd Thompson, Athletic Director at Moline High School, as our featured speaker.

Mr. Thompson reviewed the extensive athletic facility improvements completed throughout Moline-Coal Valley School District #40 in recent years, including major renovations at Browning Field and the track facility, improvements at Wharton Field House, and upcoming renovations planned for the varsity soccer field and girls softball diamonds at Moline High School.

He also answered many questions from Rotary members regarding the continued success of Moline High School athletics programs and student participation.

Moline Rotary is proud to support opportunities that strengthen our students, schools, and community, and we appreciate Mr. Thompson taking the time to share these exciting updates with our club.
