Wonderful gathering of THREE divisions of Illinois-Eastern Iowa District of Kiwanis, for a MEGA Interclub today. We’re learning about KNRF, the Kiwanis Neuroscience Research Foundation, which is ONLY supported by our II-District. Dr. Tranel was our featured researcher on Alzheimer’s and forms of Dementia.

Yesterday, Jessica Knapp of Moline Little League stopped by our meeting to give us updates on the league and its presence in the community.

The league, as she calls it, is a "baseball family" where no child is denied, and it provides over $10,000 in sponsorships to families so kids can participate on teams. Currently, they serve 33 teams, with 420 athletes ages 3.5-18, including Challenger League teams.

We are proud to give them grants, as they serve children who will become amazing members of society. In addition, their new focus is on mental health and ensuring that every child feels they belong.

Megan Brown-Saldana of Horizon Science Academy, a new free public charter school based in Davenport, IA, spoke to our group recently about their curriculum centered on science, technology, engineering, and math to prepare students for life after high school. Their mission is to foster an environment of inquiry and a love of learning so students are taught to thrive in STEM.

The Academy currently serves 210 students across grades K-7 and limits the number of entries through a lottery-based approach to entry.

We thank Megan for her time, and hope this is an expansion of an option for a public school in Illinois soon.

A big thank you to the WIU-QC Parent Mentor Program for speaking at our weekly meeting and sharing the incredible impact they make in our schools and communities.

Through their partnership with local schools, Parent Mentors support teachers, work one-on-one and in small groups with students, and help strengthen connections between families and education. Their commitment to engaging, uplifting, and empowering families creates meaningful opportunities for student success both inside and outside the classroom.

We appreciate all they do to support students, teachers, and our community! 💜
