Honored to partner with the McNeil Family for this exciting new scholarship opportunity at the University of Illinois Springfield.

BREAKING: The Porter McNeil Public Service Foundation has launched the Porter and Mary McNeil UIS Public Affairs Reporting Program (PAR) Student Support Fund at the University of Illinois Springfield, expanding the Foundation's mission to support aspiring journalists dedicated to covering government, politics, and public service.

This endowment honors Porter McNeil and his wife, Mary (Carlin) McNeil, who met as students in the University of Illinois Springfield's nationally respected Public Affairs Reporting (PAR) master's program, graduating together as members of the Class of 1986.

It was in Springfield that Porter and Mary immersed themselves in the daily work of state government, learning firsthand how public institutions function and developing the reporting, communication, and analytical skills that would shape their careers. Mary went on to become a public radio reporter covering Illinois state government, while Porter built a distinguished career spanning journalism, public affairs, political communications, and public service.

With the establishment of the Porter and Mary McNeil Public Affairs Reporting Endowment, the Foundation now supports students at two pivotal stages of their educational journey, from high school graduates beginning college to graduate students preparing to become journalists dedicated to public affairs reporting.

The Foundation plans to formally celebrate the endowment with a public launch event in Springfield in 2027. Additional details, including opportunities for individuals and organizations to contribute directly to the endowment, will be announced in the coming months.

CONGRATULATIONS! Abbie Hicks received the Pat VanBruwaene Scholarship.
This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding graduating senior from United Township. Based on the story of Pat, Abbie was chosen by staff and administration as a likely candidate to follow in Pat VanBruwaene's very successful career footsteps. Wishing Abbie the best. She will begin her college journey at Cornell College.

CONGRATULATIONS! Gabriella Gusse received the VanSpeybroeck Family Scholarship
Field of Study: Forensic Psychology / Criminal Profiling
Gabriella has always been fascinated by people — how they
think, why they act the way they do, how the same brain can
produce such different behaviors depending on circumstances.
That curiosity deepened in her psychology class at Alleman,
where a simple question — which branch of psychology would
you choose? — led her back to a lifelong interest in criminal
behavior and neurological difference. She wants to understand
not just what criminals do, but the behavioral patterns and
motivations that shape their choices. She wants to work with the
FBI in criminal profiling, piecing together personality traits and
behavioral patterns from crime scenes, contributing to teams
that bring closure to cases that might otherwise go unsolved.

CONGRATULATIONS! Iphe Carr received the Tiffany Chapman Memorial Scholarship
Field of Study: Nursing / CRNA
Iphe's journey into nursing was solidified through her high school CNA
program and hands-on experience at a local nursing home. There,
she learned that healthcare extends beyond medical procedures; it
involves making individuals feel acknowledged during their most
vulnerable moments. Building trust with residents and being a
reliable presence in times of uncertainty, along with the knowledge
that her care truly makes a difference, has given her the clearest
sense of purpose in her work.
Her long-term aspiration is to become a Certified Registered Nurse
Anesthetist, a role that captivates her with its precision, extensive
anatomical understanding, and the responsibility of ensuring
patients feel safe before daunting procedures.
