The native eastern cottontail has some excellent survival adaptations. When being chased, they don't run in a straight line. They sprint up to18 miles per hour and zig-zag to throw predators off their tail. They also are prolific breeders. Females can have up to 7 litters a year, with about 3 to 8 kits (babies) per litter. Given optimal conditions, a single pair could theoretically yield 350,000 descendants in just five years!
